Military Officers Attempted a Coup in Iraq
The government of Iraq is secretly holding a Baathist cabal of military officers it claims attempted a coup against Prime Minister al-Maliki.

The plotters were rounded up July 5 with the help of American military authorities after the Iraqi government's security warning center sent word to Mr. Maliki, who was in Kuwait on his first official visit as head of state, two highly placed Iraqi sources said.

The prime minister quickly canceled a scheduled trip to Amman, Jordan, and returned to Baghdad to attend to the matter. "The Baathists were trying to have this coup, and people have been arrested and it has been stopped. There have been a lot of rumors as to who is behind this," Mr. Alusi said, referring to speculation that the plot may have involved a former interim prime minister, Ayad Allawi, whose men worked with the CIA in 1995 to oust Saddam in a military coup.

But Mr. Alusi said Mr. Allawi was not behind the coup attempt. "I have seen the file and their pictures and I can say that this is not Ayad Allawi. These people were in the system, but they are not well-known," he said.

3. We should have allowed the Baathist coup to suceed
We wouldn't have Shias flying Hezbollah flags were we to put the Baathists back in power. Don't we even know who our natural allies are in the Middle East?

4. With the crazies in power?
We can be sure of a few things, and one of them is that they will never let reality interfere with their dreams and ambitions. They are so out of touch that they could be an invading army from a distant planet. We can't expect them to make sense.

Reality is for the ones fighting and dying, and suffering from horrific injuries in the idiot prince's lunatic wars of aggression. They will suffer, and their lives will never be the same, but dimson is blissfully ignorant of these facts, because he has always been sheltered, and bailed out by his daddy's friends. There are just a few people who could screw up as badly as he has, and not be impeached.

12. True. Its going to end up happening that way in any event
It is pretty amazing to think our government hasn't figured out that the Shiites are our enemies in the region and that invading Iraq and imposing 'democracy' would naturally lead, at least temporarily to an improvement in the Shia's fortunes, especially through an alliance with Iran.

i don't think that anybody could qualify the iraqi government as effective.
