Nelson calls land's status news to him

BY SUSAN SZALEWSKI

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson said Sunday he had not known that an acreage he owns along the Platte River was in a tax category that may have been inappropriate for his use of the land.

Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson

Supporters of his opponent, Pete Ricketts, had criticized Nelson's assertion that the wooded, 90-acre tract in Sarpy County was being used primarily for agriculture.

Mark Fahleson, a state GOP spokesman, said Sunday that as a "Washington politician," Democrat Nelson felt free to disregard the property tax laws.

The two sides in the Senate race have been trading jabs in an extended property tax controversy. Each of the candidates has been criticized by members of the opposing political party for contesting the property valuations on their homes.

1. I have a hard time believing that he did not know.
Most of our current politicians cannot be trusted, whether or not they have a D or R next to their name.

2. Nelson's no real Democrat
He's a far-right wacko who slapped a D beside his name. Anti-sex-ed, anti-abortion, the whole bit:

The SOB is guilty as charged, as all closet Republicans are.

7. So he's socially conservative. How is he fiscally?
If he's fiscally liberal, then that would make him more of a moderate rather than a 'far-right wacko'

4. In Nebraska...
Nelson is what the Democratic Party looks like...

That is just the way it is...

He is still a reliable vote for Harry Reid as majority leader...which is more than we would get out of any Republican...

12. He didn't know that 90 acres of forest was not "agricultural" land?
And this particular lack of knowledge just happened
to save him an A$$LOAD on his taxes?

These claims present us with a very clear either/or situation.

Either: he's a liar and a tax cheat,
or: he's an honest man who is simply too stupid
to be trusted with Elected Office.
*sigh*

Both of those choices suck, but what else is there?
