CHARLESTON, S.C. — Republican Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas warned that his party risks its long-term viability if it takes too hard a line on the immigration issue.
”Our culture and our world is changing, and if we alienate a major and growing part of the population — the legal voting population — we risk marginalizing ourselves within a generation,” he said. “Woe to us if we simply play to the crowd and throw red meat.”
Huckabee made his remarks to reporters on the eve of the National Governors Association’s annual meeting here this weekend. Huckabee steps down as NGA chairman today, handing the gavel to Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona.
Huckabee spent considerable time outlining his concerns about what he sees as a breakdown of the federalist system. He warned that the United States risks moving toward a centralized government akin to Japan’s, in place of an aggregation of states that “lend power” to the federal government.
