Runaway Car Kills Three in Texas

TYLER, Texas (AP) -- A car that drove out of control for nearly a mile smashed into a busy intersection Friday, killing the driver, his wife and an infant whose car seat flew 20 feet into the roadway, police said.

Police said it was unclear how fast the car was going, but witnesses reported that it was well above the speed limit when it struck nine cars, including one carrying the 8-month-old girl and two adults.

"That guy flew past us and cut through the intersection," said Ivie Umphries. "He never even looked and had to be doing over 70 miles per hour."

"There's no way of knowing how fast they were going," said Chris Moore, Tyler police public information officer. "More than half dozen people were sent to the hospital with various types of injuries."

Bystanders and the responding officer reported the vehicle was moving at a high rate of speed, possibly in excess of 100 mph.

Police Chief Gary Swindle said an officer who spotted the car did not even have time to activate his lights before the motorist crashed into the side of the Mazda. The impact tore the Mazda apart and flung the infant's car seat about 20 feet into the roadway. The infant died instantly, officials said.
