NY officials knew of terror threat

City and state officials have been aware of the unfolding terror threat for several months, authorities said yesterday, but security has mostly remained at the usual levels.

"The nature of this plot doesn't lend itself to the kind of avid, high-profile police presence that we have instituted in the wake of other terrorist plots," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said outside Bellevue Hospital Center, where he was visiting some injured city workers.

Still, the union representing Port Authority police criticized the PA, saying it had initially characterized the information as soft and essentially kept security at the airports unchanged.

"Prior to today, it was just another beautiful day in paradise," said Gus Danese, president of the Port Authority's Police Benevolent Association. "Now, all hell's breaking loose."

The authority would not comment on that criticism.

So for weeks the powers that be all knew about this threat and everything was business has usual. Shouldn't they heighten security while the 'threat' is still on the loose? Why bother after they've put them in jail?

1. Something is fishy here.

Think about it.
There is an operative that infiltrates a terrorist organization that is supposedly real with real plans. In order to maintain cover the info the operative gets will move up a SECURE chain of command (keeping in mind that the last thing anyone wants is for their cover to be blown) all the while the agency is collecting intellegence. That info may very well go all the way to the prime minister. Maybe even shrub, but I can't believe for a minute that that intellegence would work its way back down to the level of a U.S. city local government unless the investigation was finished. Finished several months ago. Of course we know it wasn't because the arrest were just made.

2. Yeah, I'd say it's a waste of local resources to go on alert against

a plot still in it's planning phase going on thousands of miles away, and for which the intended targets will be downed before they ever reach the local law enforcement's jurisdiction to act.

BTW the plot wasn't completely foiled, it was at partially successful particularly with respect to both acutely disrupting our air-transportation system and demonstrating that fear of terrorists can reach far up into the civil administration of the "great western democracies" and induce changes in policy.

4. Heightened Security should mandate removal of every Republican Governor

in the US..

States are held hostage by the existing majority of Lockstep Republican governorships
held in this country. Remove them all, and breathe for freedom.
