McBride wants Harris apology
McBride wants Harris apology
A co-chairwoman of Harris' Senate campaign says she was told by a staffer to ask McBride a racially sensitive question.
By ANITA KUMAR, Times Staff Writer
Published August 12, 2006

U.S. Senate candidate Will McBride demanded an apology from Republican rival Katherine Harris Friday after learning that the person who asked him a racially charged question at a debate works for Harris.

Jackie Brownhill, identified as a co-chairwoman for the Harris campaign in the Tampa Bay area, asked McBride why he changed his name from Rodriguez in front of a crowd last week at a Pinellas County Republican club forum.

McBride, who has grandmothers from Mexico and the Dominican Republic, denied he had changed his name.

It "is more compelling proof that Ms. Harris should apologize clearly and sincerely for the outrageous remarks of a member of her campaign organization," McBride said Friday. "How sad it is that Katherine Harris lacks the grace to admit that her campaign team has acted at the very least callously, and apologize for their actions."

At the time, Brownhill, who was wearing a Harris sticker, said a Harris campaign staffer had instructed her to ask. She also said of McBride, "He doesn't look American."

1. Katherine Harris does NOT lack grace!
It's just that she has all the grace of a rabid wolverine. I still believe in you, Katie!

3. Please, no cheap shots at Moxie and Spunk
They never hurt anyone. They're just part of Kate's 2 point plan to win Florida by inflating her numbers.

4. While she shouldn't have asked
It does make you wonder if he really did change his name, so people wouldn't know he was Hispanic.

8. The article says his grandmothers were from Mexico and the Caribbean
so there's every chance he has the name handed down by his dad.

It would be so easy to verify if any opponent wanted to pursue it, so it seems unlikely.

16. I am hispanic
both Mom and Dad are hispanics, but my last name is Dutch. My grandpa married a Latina, he was Dutch. Maybe that is the case with McBride, and like you said his name was handed down by his Dad side of the family.

Not all bigots are Republicans but all Republicans are bigots.

9. They probably know he didn't, but asking the question
is accusing him of the same. And it's a racial tactic, much like if someone was named "Gold," and was asked if it used to be "Goldberg," the questioner would be trying to use anti-Semitism to their advantage.

17. There's a ton of Hispanic people out there with non-Hispanic names
Edited on Wed Aug-16-06 12:19 AM by Ken Burch
Ever heard of a guy in New Mexico named Bill Richardson, for example?

Or a great singer from Tucson named Linda Ronstadt?

Or the Puerto Rican topical songwriter Roy Brown?

And in a state like Florida nobody would WANT to hide a Hispanic identity.

I'm surprised at you, Florez Rey.

Everyone knows that white guys like me are the only real 'mericans.

Chicks and kids are just part of our possessions.

13. As large as the Hispanic population is in FL, a Hispanic surname would be
an advantage. So... what a stupid question, as well as a tacky, nasty one.
