By SUSAN HAIGH

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Sen. Joe Lieberman made an unusual pitch to people outside Connecticut when he conceded the state's Democratic primary to Ned Lamont and announced plans to run as an independent.

"If you're disappointed with the ugly tone of our politics, if you're fed up with the nasty partisanship in Washington, then I ask your help, too," said Lieberman, who was criticized as being too close to the Republican administration.

Lieberman called on people across America to visit his Web site and send ideas "on how we can build this new politics of unity and purpose." He also hit them up for campaign contributions.

"Together I am confident that we can find common ground and secure a better future for our children," he said. "That, and not partisanship, is what our politics ought to be about."

you embracing (and embraced by) the Rethugs? Ugly politics is the sea they swim in.

5. Lieberman's clearly advocating some kind of "Unity Party".
Don't get me wrong, I think unity would be a great thing. I just don't believe that Democrats can expect true "unity" with many non-Democrats without sacrificing Democratic ideals.

...and I don't want to belong to a party that sacrifices Democratic ideals...regardless of the "unity" it creates.

16. Well, it isn't as though Lamont didn't find
support outside of Connecticut.

If it hadn't been for the netroots Lamont would have been toast.

That said, I think Lieberman should bow out and take his lumps. That's democracy.

17. There was a great letter to the Minneapolis paper
after the primary questioning why Lieberman supports "spreading democracy in Iraq"*, but it unwilling to accept the results of a democratic election in his own state.

*In defense of the letter writer, the tone of letter made it clear the writer doesn't buy that's what we're doing.

19. Joe Lieberman is sooo full of shit. The only way that Democrats can be
bipartisan in Washington at this time is to do whatever the republicans want them to do.

Bipartisanship is the path to hell for Democrats in the US right now.

We have to fight tooth and nail against everything the republicans do, because everything they do is another nail in the coffin of American democracy.

How do you have "bipartisanship" when the rethugs take, take, take - and never give? And when the dems give, the rethugs just chuckle at our weakness, and demand more!

29. Yes, that's what I meant
I was repeating an early message that Joe is not like a Republican. That makes him appealing to Republicans. Joe is 10% less of a Democrat than Lamont. That's why he lost.

30. Joe habitually undermines the Democratic party
and lends credibility to the Repubs. Joe stands with the most extreme neocons on foreign policy matters. Joe got endorsed by the likes of Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter, and is now recieving advice and support from Karl Rove and Dick Cheney. That's why Joe lost. That's why he needs to be defeated in the general election as badly as if he were a Republican.

If you support him, you will have to do it on some other site, or you will be in violation of the rules.

34. Please write Dems to tell them to campaign for Lamont
In the past, state Democrats in Connecticut have not hesitated to hang one of their own out to dry - see Bill Curry in 2002 - by not actively campaiging for the party's nominee. None of the major Democrats in the state actively supported Curry in 2002 - Dodd, Lieberman, Larson, DeLauro, etc. - because Curry had an uphill battle against the corrupt governor Johnny "Hot Tub" Rowland. However, it was not an insurmountable lead for Rowland and a vigorous campaign by state Dems could have helped immensely.

I think if state Dems of prominence get out there quickly and actively, it's more possible that Joememtum drops out. I would also hope the Clintons come to town soon to campaign for Lamont. An early appearance by either, or both, of them would mean a lot for Lamont.

If Democrats just say they support Lamont, but don't actively campaign for him, it will send a very strong message that they don't really support Ned.

37. No problem - it's important
In the past, state Democrats have left their own hung out to dry if they think they have an uphill battle, or even a tough race. I hope people like Chris Dodd and others can be persuaded to campaign as vigorously for Lamont as they did for Lieberman leading up to the primary.

38. Of course it's partisan - it's a party primary
Get real, Joe: Lamont and the rest of the party are playing by the rules. You ran for the Democratic Party nomination and you were defeated. The party is now throwing its support behind the winner of the primary. That's what they're supposed to do.

Stop whining and being a sore loserman: either support Lamont or resign from the party - and all your party-appointed postins in the senate.
