FRANKLINVILLE, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey will inspect 1,846 sites removed from a list of contaminated properties in response to revelations that a daycare center opened in a polluted former thermometer factory.
One-third of the children who attended the center have tested positive for elevated mercury levels, but none of the 60 children had a dangerous level of the toxin in their system, according to the Department of Health and Senior Services. Three of nine adults from the center also showed elevated levels.
Mercury can damage the nervous system of young children, impairing their ability to think and learn.
Meanwhile, New Jersey Attorney General Zulima V. Farber has launched an investigation into how the building became home to Kiddie Kollege, which opened in 2004.
