TOKYO, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Power outages in large areas of Tokyo and surrounding areas darkened offices, halted some rail services and disrupted traffic early on Monday.

The outages started around 7:40 a.m. (2240 GMT on Sunday) as commuters headed to work, although many offices were lightly staffed due summer holidays.

Power company officials were not immmediately available to explain the cause.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange said it was checking if trading would start as usual at 9:00 a.m. (0000 GMT).

5. There was no earthquake
From what I read on the Sankei newspaper site, it is a power failure in Chiba Prefecture, one section of Tokyo, cause not listed.

8. Nope
Crane on a ship took out a major line. Trains here have been affected badly, but being summer holidays, it is the roads that have been hardest hit - 32 km traffic jam on one expressway coming into the metro area.

Not pleasant, especially as it is a pretty steamy day today here in the big mikan!!

Power back after outage hits large areas of Tokyo
Mon Aug 14, 2006 12:08am ET

TOKYO (Reuters) - Power came back hours after a rare outage caused
by an industrial accident affected large areas of Tokyo on Monday,
darkening homes and offices, trapping people in elevators and
disrupting transport and computer systems.

The outage, caused when a construction crane on a boat hit power lines,
started around 7:40 a.m. (2240 GMT on Sunday) as offices were opening
and commuters were heading for work.

Power supplies were fully restored about three hours later, and most
rail service returned to normal in the capital.

A spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power Co. Inc., which serves an area
with a population of more than 30 million, said more than 1.39 million
homes were affected.
