CNN Breaking: Two Fox News Employees Abducted in Gaza
Edited on Mon Aug-14-06 12:57 PM by VolcanoJen
Breaking now... will post link when it emerges.

Update - Link:

Two Fox News journalists kidnapped in Gaza: witness (Reuters)

Excerpt:

Palestinian gunmen kidnapped two foreign journalists working for the Fox News television channel in Gaza on Monday, a witness said.

The witness, a Palestinian who worked with the two journalists, said one of them, a producer, was an American, and the other, whose nationality he did not know, was a cameraman.

The Fox News bureau in Jerusalem said it was checking the report.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the abduction.

The witness said two vehicles blocked the journalist's transmission truck in the center of Gaza City and a masked man put a gun to the bodyguard's head, forcing him to the ground.

What a commentary that posters here offer excuses and/or support for such bloodthirsty entities as Hamas, Hizbullah, Iran & Syria. JFK is spinning in his grave at the virile opposition to the one democracy in the Mideast in favor of religious kooks - how low we have gone.

41. Names have been released
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Palestinian gunmen ambushed a car carrying a Fox News crew in Gaza City on Monday and kidnapped two of the journalists inside, according to witnesses and Fox. "We can confirm that two of our people were taken against their will in Gaza," Fox News said in a statement.

A Fox employee in Gaza, who declined to give his name because he was not authorized to release information about the incident, said the two kidnapped people were reporter Steve Centanni, a U.S. citizen, and a cameraman from New Zealand.

The men, along with a bodyguard, were parked near the headquarters of the Palestinian security services when two trucks filled with gunmen pulled up and boxed them in, according to the employee. The gunmen took the two out of their sports utility vehicle, which was marked "TV," and drove away, he said.

here is his Fox bio:
Steve Centanni is a national correspondent for FOX News Channel (FNC). He has been with the network since its inception in 1996 and has reported on numerous global news stories and events.

In July 2003, Centanni was the first television network reporter to provide on-site reports from the building where Uday and Qusay Hussein were killed after a gun battle with the 101st Airborne Division. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Centanni served as an embedded journalist with the Navy SEAL’s and provided numerous first reports for the network, including a report that the U.S. had captured two main offshore oil terminals located 22 miles off Iraq's southern coast, preventing them from being blown up by the Iraqis.

Whether he is biased or not he has the balls to go out there into the battle zone to report unlike those pricks who sit in the Fox News studio who spout their bullshit in suits and ties.

Lets not forget the New Zealand cameraman either.

43. Hate to tell the kidnappers, but Fox news employees aren't journalists...
I guess if they just wanted some hostages, that
would be one thing- but if they were specifically
trying to nab some JOURNALISTS, they sure picked the wrong
people, eh?

Maybe they'll toss them back once they realize
they picked up a couple of media whores instead
of actual journalists.

I certainly hope so, as I would hate for the
kidnappers to mete out retaliation on them
for their part in enabling the situation in the ME.

58. He's a reporter
who works for a right-wing media organization. I don't care. He's still an American reporter who has been kidnapped while on the job. He has a family too. I don't think his kidnappers care if he worked for Fox either; they'd have done the same w/any reporter who happened to be on the scene. This is a disturbing development for all journalists working in the Gaza strip. If we laugh it up at this because of who he worked for, then we're no better than the Freepers who made fun of Jill Carroll, IMO.

70. Respectfully, no, that's not true.
We're, or at least I'm, laughing at the irony of this - that people working for the single biggest lie-factory on television get kidnapped by some of the very people they constantly lie about.

No one wishes for them to die, but it's hard to have sympathy for people who align themselves with professional liars for money.

55. One is from the US the other is from New Zealand
but they both have my best wishes for a safe return.

A Fox employee in Gaza, who declined to give his name because he was not authorized to release information about the incident, said the two kidnapped people were reporter Steve Centanni, a U.S. citizen, and a cameraman from New Zealand.

126. Here is a Fox link to Centanni's bio/pic
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,1182,00.html

In 2006, Centanni provided on-site live coverage on rescue efforts for miners trapped in a West Virginia coal mine. Last year he reported from London on the aftermath of the London bombings, and from Rome in April during the funeral of Pope John Paul II. In 2004, Centanni provided coverage throughout the year on the presidential election.

In July 2003, Centanni was the first television reporter to provide on-site reports from the building where Uday and Qusay Hussein were killed after a gun battle with the 101st Airborne Division. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Centanni served as an embedded journalist with the Navy SEAL's and provided numerous first reports for the network, including a report that the U.S. had captured two main offshore oil terminals located 22 miles off Iraq's southern coast, preventing them from being blown up by the Iraqis.

Previously, while covering the War on Terrorism in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Centanni was first to report the fall of the Taliban in their final stronghold of Kandahar. During Operation Enduring Freedom, he reported on U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, the new interim government in Kabul and hostilities between Pakistani and Indian troops along the frontlines in Kashmir. Currently, Centanni is covering the crisis in Iraq and is stationed in Doha, Qatar.

Sadly, there's no "infuriated" smilie to show my rage at what a ridiculous concept it is to call anyone connected with FOX News "reporters".

But I'm not angry at you, you have a good heart and are just being too kind to people who helped sell the Iraq war lies and countless others. You mean well - it's just that they don't deserve that label.

136. I understand
:hi: Well, I guess it depends on your definition. I think Fox News is only slightly worse than CNN & MSNBC. All are mindless, repetitive, & superficial - sometimes it seems like CNN is just as into the fear-mongering & propaganda. At least w/Fox News, you know what you're getting. Also, I have a little more respect for the correspondents than the desk "pundits" like O'Reilly & Hannity. Fox News or no, they are actually out there in the field in dangerous places like Beirut & Gaza. So who's a "real" journalist - it's getting hard to tell! Personally, I'd vote for Jon Stewart.

This part of her story seems to have told and re-told repeatedly over the past few days.

Where's the part where she criticizes Islamofascism, calls the terrorists a bunch of muderous barbarians, and thanks God for a country like the United States? I seem to have missed that part of her story.

Ya know, that is totally wrong to say things like that. But, here in DU there is always some sort of conspiracy theory floating around, so what's the difference? A half baked conspiracy theory is a half baked conspiracy theory no matter if it's a freeper theory or a DU theory. I hope these men are released safe and sound, regardless of who they work for. 79. We can't savor the irony?
These people engage in and enable FOX News' constant lies about pretty much everything, including the Palestinians, and then they're seized by some of the very people they've lied about incessantly - helping craft American opinion that gets these people killed by Americans not being outraged by the Israeli government's treatment of them.

From a karmic viewpoint, the irony is perfect, and informative: don't lie about others, because you might be at their mercy someday.

That's not wishing ill on them; it's recognizing the funny way life works.

I love the smell and sound of Bushites and Malkin being deleted in the evening. Turn up the sound. I want to hear the birth pangs of a new Democracy!

114. In the political arena hereabouts, FOX News people are fair game,
and we don't hold much back posting what we think of their "balanced" reporting.

Here, with this abduction, they are unaffiliated humans who deserve unimpeded throughway for their work.

I hope they are released, soon, and unharmed.

Criticizing the message and standards of news reporters is completely separate from this incident. All human beings deserve to be kept safe from abductions and physical harm.

We can all despise Fox news and still hope these two people are quickly and safely released.

129. No sarcasm from me on this one -- yes, they're humans. They would
be humans to their wives, or husbands, or daughters, or sons, or neighbors, or S.O.s or co-workers, or friends.

We have every leave to object to the horrendous reporting on FOX News, and we fire away accordingly.

But abduction trumps politics. No one should be taken and held against their will, nevermind harmed.

I think captured would be a proper description of the situation given that they worked for the PR Department of the other side.

How do we know it is real and not some stunt? Seriously, the Republic party lies, spins and paints everything else, why not this?

Also, FOX is negotiating to obtain their release? I thought the Republicists did not negotiate with terrorists. No, that's a lie.

There is a clear choice this fall.

Edited on Mon Aug-14-06 04:17 PM by Oreo
Including a lovely internal email from FOX

http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/

FNC senior VP John Moody's internal message to Fox News personnel about the kidnapping:

"The rumors are true: two of our employees have been abducted in Gaza. We will report this fact via our Israel correspondents. Do NOT do any other segments on it. Do not book guests on this topic. Do not comment officially and of course, not on the air, about it. DO pray for their release. I will keep you posted."

They finally get a chance to report something that's actually occurring and they pass on it.

179. They've been complicit in Bush's crimes against humanity
Goebels may never have actually picked-up a weapon and killed someone personally, but he was every bit as complicit in The Holocaust and Mengele and Hitler.

Welcome to DU, by the way.

I'm glad to see that you've used one of your first two posts to rush to the defense of the people who have been abusing and dismantling our country.

The people in front of the cameras at Fox are every bit as complicit as the people behind the barrels of the guns.

The pen is mightier than the sword... and equally complicit in the ongoing global Genocide.

These Nazi Information Officers get absolutely ZERO sympathy from me.

Boo fucking hoo.

They kidnapped Faux TV employees.

It's their war. I hope they enjoy reaping its fruits.

I'm glad to see you've jumped to a Hitler analogy.

Barrels of what guns, by the way? Those of American soldiers? I suppose you'd be just as satisfied if these were soldiers who were kidnapped -- somehow I doubt that (or maybe I really did give DU too much credit, having been a quiet fan up until I read of this story and the tone of the majority of responses).

If you believe these two to be complicit in war crimes, then surely there is a better way to deal with them, rather than out-sourcing justice to these kidnappers, who would just as likely take you hostage, were you in the area as a reporter.

Some people say those "journalists" staged their own abduction so they spend time having sex with child prostitutes.

Did Rush Limbaugh arrange a child sex tourism junket for Fox TV journalists? That's what folks are saying.
