Ceasefire 'a setback for Iran and Syria', says US

The UN-declared ceasefire in Lebanon, if fully implemented, will be a strategic setback for Iran and Syria, the US State Department said today.

The move will strengthen democracy in Lebanon and stabilises the border with Israel, according to spokesman Sean McCormack.

“You will not have Hezbollah roaming freely in the south of Lebanon,” he said. “Iran and Syria will not have had the ability to rearm Hezbollah.”

The militia, designated as a terrorist group by the department, has fought for 34 days with Israel. The guerrillas used rockets and other weapons provided by Iran and, according to US and Israeli officials, channelled through Syria.

They say things as though they were meaningful, and then commit the heinous error of thinking what they say necessarily reflect the truth.

If ever the notion of a "socially constructed reality" were to actually be the case, it would be at a meeting of diplomats.

The ceasefire, if fully implemented, would be a setback for Iran and Syria. More for Syria than for Iran; it can accomplish its goals just as well, since it has a lot of them.

But the ceasefire will not be fully implemented; the dipomat's carefully crafted reality doesn't conform to the universe as it treats us. No Frenchman is going to want to die to disarm Hezb, and if the French commander orders Frenchmen to engage Hezb militarily his days will be numbered.

The Lebanese Army's not about to do the job.

Hezb will stay armed, and restock with new and improved munitions.
