Family wary of possible Hagel run

BY JOSEPH MORTON

WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

WASHINGTON - If U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska decides he wants to be president, he will need to convince millions of American voters that he should have the job.

e may want to start with his own family.

In a new Hagel biography, the senator's wife, Lilibet, indicates that she's less than thrilled by the possibility of being the nation's first lady.

"Lilibet said having her husband in the White House 'wouldn't be number one on (her) list of desirable occupations,' adding 'I can think of a lot of other jobs that would be more fun,'" writes Charlyne Berens in "Chuck Hagel: Moving Forward."

1. Speaking for myself of course, I pray to God that she doesn't
have anything to worry about.

2. Well, Chuck would have to 'splain those voting machines...and then
tell us why he didn't oppose the Bush cabal except in a few fancy words.

3. He is one of the very few republicans I can stand
I am not saying I like him though. But he's much better than Bush, Cheney, Rummy, Rice etc etc

4. Are you aware he was elected by voting machines made by the
company he had been CEO of before the election? He didn't bother to disclose this in his campaign speeches, but you'll find a good many people who believe Chuck Hagel was "elected" only in the sense G.aWol.B. was "elected" in 2000.

I haven't seen Hagel's CV but would be curious to know if his stint with the voting machine manufacturer appears on it.

6. I don't think he needed vote fraud...
Considering how Republican Nebraska is, I think you could put a 50-pound sack of fertilizer on the GOP ticket and it would win.

We need to get over this "the only way Rethugs get elected is by fraud" idea. Let's face it, there are a LOT of idiots out there who vote for them. I'm not saying fraud doesn't happen (Florida 2000, Ohio 2004), I'm just saying that it isn't always about fraud.

7. No, I am not following him that closely
It's just when I see him on TV, I don't have that urge to switch channels.

8. He is not pro-party enough to get through the GOP primary easily
Any primary gets messy but he has seen the recent trend with the attacks on McCain. The GOP primary will mostly be about social issues and not economic issues. So is he "pro-life" and "pro-family" enough (aka anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage)?

9. He's a veteran
He'll probably get 'swiftboated' by the supporters of George Felix Allen, the racist who spent the Vietnam War on a dude ranch.
