Democratic Senate Candidate promises to cure cancer by 2015
"With a month to go before primary voters head to the polls to choose Senate nominees, Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin kicked off yesterday a weeklong effort to highlight his congressional record and vision on health care by making the mother of all campaign promises - to cure cancer.

Cardin, a Democrat from Baltimore County, gathered with cancer survivors and doctors in Lutherville to detail his efforts to expand cancer screening and his plans to fight the disease.

"We are going to lick cancer by 2015," Cardin told a group of 15 people at the HopeWell Cancer Support Center on Falls Road.

The health care push comes as he and other candidates fight to distinguish themselves from the crowd of Democrats and Republicans vying to replace retiring incumbent Paul S. Sarbanes, the state's longest-serving senator. All are hoping to make their views and accomplishments known as voters start to pay more attention to the high-profile race."

He did not say "cure cancer", that is what the author of the article said.

He said "We are going to lick cancer by 2015,".

There's a big difference.

No where in the article does he use the word cure.

9. He sounds like *
WHY could he not make a commitment to more funding? Cancer is 100's of different diseases....LICK Cancer was rightfully interpreted by the columnist and the the political scientist the same way. What OTHER interpretation would you put on his statement?

10. Sounds to me like
his words were twisted by the columnist. I remember what they did to Gore's statement about the internet.

11. Answer me this
Edited on Tue Aug-15-06 03:25 PM by Tempest
How can he make a commitment to funding if (1) the Democrats are not in power and do not set the agenda and (2) there's no support from the Repugs to commit to more funding?

Give him a chance. If Democrats take back Congress, then let's see if funding is increased. I'll bet a retirement check it is.

>>Lick Cancer was rightfully interpreted by the columnist and the the political scientist the same way<<

Relying on someone else's interpretation to base your own belief on is a sign of a weak mind.

15. In this case the journalist added his own editorial
Changing "lick" to "cure" is not journalism, it's editorialism.

Just as your use of the word "pandering" is editorialism.

12. Good catch
but as you see some still fall for the twisted media wording. I think an e-mail to the author about that twisting of words will set him straight. They need to be hit for their false interpretations.

16. 3 things...
He didn't say that, as has been noted. The columnist is stuffing words in his mouth with a dishonest headline -- another bit of "Al Gore Says He Invented the Internet" crap. LBN rules say you have to use the headline intact, though, so don't blame the OP.

Second, if we cured 90% of cancer cases even if that was only 5 of the major kinds of cancer, I would say we would have for the most part "cured cancer"

Third, we are a lot closer to having actual cures for cancer than most people realize. It would not be unreasonable to say that cancer will be cured in 2015 -- as to whether that cure will be available anywhere but in an FDA trial program, that's an open question. However, semantically, a cure is a cure whether or not it is administered.

18. That's is certainly YOUR editorial
BEFORE we 'cure' any cancer it will become a manageable disease like diabetes. Considering ALL cancers are entirely different diseases, different causes, different treatments this will never happen that fast.Having the research dollars funded by congress will help to speed the process. Clinical trials can take years, development of drugs or vaccines will take additional years.

Sounds like an uplifting speech about improving screening and research. Nothing wrong with that.

13. Not any crazier than
winning the war on terror. Actually, licking cancer is more likely than the other, especially if the Repugs stay in power. Cancer can be fought with weapons. Terror can not.
