TV Newser: CBS To Offer Online Simulcast Of Evening News with Katie Couric
"Groundbreaking:" CBS To Offer Online Simulcast Of Evening News with Katie Couric

Beginning Sept. 5, the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric will be simulcast live on the Internet, Sean McManus and Larry Kramer announced today.

The webcast will be free and ad-supported. "The move, announced this morning, makes CBS News the first of the network newscasts to use the Internet for simultaneous transmission of the news," Broadcasting & Cable says.

Kramer tells mediabistro.com that the network has negotiated a new agreement with CBS affiliates that allows the simulcast to happen.

There's one catch: "To access the simulcast, viewers will be asked to register so that they view it when the television broadcast is aired in their time zone," CBS says.

McManus calls the simulcast is "a groundbreaking development in making the program available to the largest possible audience." He added: "It's another giant step towards providing CBS News content to people wherever they are -- in their homes, in their offices, in their cars, on their computers or on their cell phones." The program will also be available on-demand.

3. They're trying hard to avoid becoming completely irrelevant . . .
Social/demographic trends have been carving away the audience for evening newscasts for years. Nobody's at home at 6pm to sit around the dinner table and watch the news -- they're still at the office or stuck in traffic. Not to mention that there's as much news as one could ever want all over the cable spectrum (not to mention the Internet).

I see this as a reasonable response by CBS, but one that I don't give a rat's ass about. I wasn't going to watch anyway.

8. She's just reading the damn news
...They are making such a big deal over her, shes certainly not the first female evening news host. The whole forums they've been holding are unnecessary and a total waste of resources also I am absolutely SICK of hearing these TV asshats ask repeatedly "what is she going to wear" "what is she going to wear", "OH what is she going to wear"

12. I prefer Amy Goodman on Democracy Now
I prefer watching real news on the internet, by a real journalist, telling it like it is.

13. Will she now be able to "get back with us" in two forums?
COURIC: Hey, wait a second. Democrats took — Democrats took money from Abramoff too, Mr. Dean.

DEAN: That is absolutely false. That did not happen. Not one dime of money from Jack Abramoff went to any Democrat at any time.

COURIC: Let me just tell you — According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Abramoff and his associates gave $3 million to Republicans and $1.5 million to Democrats, including Sen. Minority Leader Harry Reid.

DEAN: Not one dime of Jack Abramoff money ever went to any Democrat. We can show you the FEC reports, we’d be very happy to do it. There’s a lot of stuff in the press that the Republican National Committee’s been spinning that this is a bipartisan scandal. It is a Republican-financed scandal. Not one dime of money from Jack Abramoff ever went to any Democrat, not one dime.

COURIC: Well, we’ll obviously have to look into that and clarify that for our viewers at a later date. Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Mr. Dean, Governor Dean, thanks so much for talking with us.

DEAN: Thanks very much.

C'mon, Katie, it's been seven months now...when's that "later date?"

15. I haven't watched the news since Bush became the pResident,
but even so I think that CBS has lost its mind. To put a PUG lightweight like Couric on the evening news and to totally dismiss Dan Rather after his years of great news coverage are signs of manic depression to my mind.
