"An Australian government official last night described the US media reports as "extremely concerning". "A nuclear test would be an extremely dangerous and provocative step and a direct threat to regional security and stability,' the official told The Weekend Australian.

"Australia would support very strong action by the international community in response to any tests."

The White House did not confirm or deny the reports, but said any nuclear test by the reclusive Stalinist state would be an "extremely provocative" act that would be denounced around the globe."
