AT&T says cooperation in NSA spying was legal

ASPEN, Colo.--An AT&T executive on Tuesday offered a glimpse into how the company appears to have opened its networks to the National Security Agency.

James Cicconi, AT&T's senior executive vice president for external and legislative affairs, said there is a "very specific federal statute" that the company followed when cooperating with the NSA that provides "black and white authorization."

"We have simply complied with those laws," he said.

That's a slightly more detailed explanation than AT&T has publicly offered so far. In February, AT&T declined to answer related questions from CNET News.com. In May, an AT&T spokesman told News.com: "Without commenting on or confirming the existence of the program, we can say that when the government asks for our help in protecting national security, and the request is within the law, we will provide that assistance."

2. I've swtiched from AT&T.
I used AT&T for local, long distance, and DSL until recently.

But mostly because of AT&T's moves against Net Neutrality, I decided not to support them as a customer, anymore.

As of tonight, I'm getting all my phone and DSL from other companies.

I think AT&T's CEO needs to spend some time clearing the world's leftover minefields with a stick.

13. This thread by IChing seems relevant
Investigations into the alleged suicides of both Adamo Bove and Costas Tsalikidis raise questions about more than the suspicious circumstances of their deaths. They point to politicized, illegal intelligence structures that rely upon cooperative business executives....
