Dixie Chicks documentary could be election issue
Dixie Chicks documentary could be election issue

By Gregg Goldstein Tue Aug 22, 9:29 AM ET

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - The politically charged documentary "Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing" has been picked up for worldwide distribution by the Weinstein Co.

A release is tentatively scheduled for the fall, possibly right before the November elections.

The film revolves around the aftermath of singer
Natalie Maines' statement at a 2003 London concert, where she said, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

It chronicles death threats, political attacks and radio boycotts against the country trio, and that could make the film a political hot potato as well as potential ammo should longtime Democratic party supporter Harvey Weinstein become involved in the fall political campaigns..

5. Why a Yahoo story on this docu, and not Spike Lee's, vis a vis election?
I would think Spike's HBO Kartrina documentray would contain evidence more damning.

14. They're not hurting but they've taken a commericial hit
Their current album went platinum but if you followed a comparison of sales between this and the last studio album they took a good sized hit. That can probably be equally attributed to lack of radio support and people still boycotting them. Although, with all the media coverage they got I don't completely accept the radio freeze-out as being the primary source of their downturn in sales.

Also, even if certain dates sold out quickly, for the most part their concerts have taken a while to sell out this time around (the DC show had seats of all price levels still being advertised up till a few days before the concert).

One thing I think people forget is that on the last go around that most if not all the shows were pretty much sold out "prior" to Maines' making her comments.

15. Blame some of the low turnout at concerts on the radio stations
and concert venues; hard to buy a ticket if they never go on sale.

Who's to Blame for Dixie Chicks cancellation?

Radio, promoter each blames other for cut in Chicks tour

More than 20,000 Dixie Chicks fans in Houston bought the band's latest album, the 1.5 million-selling Taking the Long Way.

That much is clear, along with the fact that the Dixie Chicks' Houston concert date was canceled.

The promoter blames the radio stations.

Initial reports cited slow ticket sales. But tickets for the Toyota Center show never went on sale.

The country radio stations credit their listeners with the cancellation and blame the Chicks for a bad attitude.

The fans will have to book trips to Dallas or Austin.

Louis Messina, president of the Messina Group, the Houston-based concert promoter that booked the Dixie Chicks' Accidents and Accusations Tour says Houston's country radio stations refused advertising dollars to promote the show.

Radio is still upset with the band's loose-lipped members — singer Natalie Maines, fiddler Martie Maguire and banjoist Emily Robison — who publicly requested a divorce from the country format earlier this year.

12. And Fahrenheit 911?
These movies are great for what they say, but I don;t think they change elections..

They just say the stuff that we should be getting with the daily news..every day..and for free..

The fact that we have to pay for the truth and buy a book or go to a theatre is what's wrong with America..

The people who "hate" them will hate them more, and those of us who applaud them will just see what we already know..

The money that these documentaries cost should be matched and used for buying radio stations and gaiuning controlling interest in tv stations so that the truth could be seen regularly..and to provide a haven for some good journalists.

there are a lot of good journalists who have families to support and who cannot "jump ship", even though they would dearly love to.. they have nowhere to go..

13. They may not change an election, but they help.
Kerry won a near landslide in 04 and Moore's movie certainly didn't hurt the cause. I suspect it added a good deal to the numbers in fact.

The problem is that we don't have a democracy at present since our vote is counted in total secrecy without any verification of the accuracy of the count, so all this is really moot. There's no reason to have confidence in any so-called election result.
