Poll: 74 Percent of Americans Expect Attack

Poll: 74 Percent of Americans Expect Attack

Nearly three-quarters of U.S. residents in a cable news poll said al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden is plotting a major attack on the United States.

The poll of 1,033 people for the network by Opinion Research Corporation found 30 percent felt the attack would be successful, while 44 percent said it would not.

However, public confidence in the possible capture of bin Laden has fallen, the poll indicated.

In 2001, a similar poll found 76 percent of people were confident of a capture. In 2004, that number fell to 66 percent, and down to 58 percent in the most recent telephone poll, conducted Aug. 18-20.

3. Why would anyone think bin Laden would be captured?
It has been five years and the bin Laden search task force has been disbanded. No one is looking. How does that 58% who believe he will be captured figure the capture will happen. By osmosis perhaps?

6. That's why he'll be captured in October
I hope all of this is just b/c it's the 5 year anniversary of 9/11. If Bush hadn't gone into Iraq Bin Laden would have been caught. Dems need to ram this into people's feeble minds.

7. 74% expect an "attack"? That's enough to satisfy bushco that "they" can

safely go ahead and Make It Happen On Purpose. Watch HERE for a great (sic) October surprise.

30. So 26% are either clueless or disagree with the phrasing of the question
I don't know how anyone can NOT expect another major attack, whether from Osama & company or someone else.

8. The fact is, there almost certainly will be another attack
It may or may not be successful, but it will come. The issue here is, is setting fire to the Middle East going to make such an attack more or less likely. Anyone who says "less" has got a Kool Aid addiction problem and should be sent to a home for recovering Repukes for a few years of electro-shock therapy. It's the only solution.

10. Exactly
This is the point I've been driving home to every person I meet. We're less safe now not more.

I tell people this administration has been stirring a hornets nest with a stick and we're the ones who will be paying for their foolishness for years to come.

13. I am been reading ...
... "The Next Attack" by Daniel Benjamin and Steven Simon.

(They also wrote "The Age of Sacred Terror" — which I also recommend strongly)

From the jacket:

"New York. Bali. Madrid. London. Four years after the start of a global war on terror, the trail of bodies from jihadist terrorist attacks continues to lengthen and the attacks keep coming. Why? Usama bin Laden's "achievement" in standing up to the American colossus on 9/11 has inspired others to follow his lead, but America has also undermined its own goals in its confrontation with the enemy. The occupation of Iraq has galvanized still more Muslims and convinced them of the truth of bin Laden's vision. Our failure to understand our opponents' ideology has meant that we have inadvertently confirmed their story, and, in do so, we are clearing the way for the next attack."

14. Sadly, GOP has foisted deeply rooted Catch-22 on America:
Them: You have to elect Republicans to prevent eminent attack.

Us:But there is no eminent attack.

Them: Because you elected Republicans!

18. Do you trust polls? I want to see the details of this poll.
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 06:48 PM by Dover
I want to see the questions asked, the group polled, etc. And I want to know all about the company, it's owners, its history, etc. I do know that Opinion Research Corporation was just bought out by InfoUSA this month.

Why do people assume that polls are less likely to be 'compromised' for political gains than the media, or other information sources that have been bought out by propagandists?

With everyone so dependent on polls to determine what they and others think, it seems very likely that indeed they ARE compromised. At any rate, it's very easy to manipulate polls.

24. Most of these things are just laughable
in terms of any sort of acuracy. They're meant TO INFLUENCE public opinion- NOT to reflect it.

Gallup is one of the worst offenders- but there are all sorts of fly by night outfits out there of hire that do cheap media polls designed to promote all sorts of far right policies and opinions.

Of course, you can't tell that to the thousands of DU'ers who have poll fetishes- they'll jut go on beliving that what such and such poll said on any given day is the Gospel truth.

28. Just did!
LOL.

Surveys are diffucult in the best of circumstances- even with validated instruments and appropriately selected randomized sample(s).

Cheap media polls on the other hand- like I said- any graduate student worth their salt- much less epidemiologists and others who actually look for "things" as they are in real life -just has to laugh at these sometimes.

Sometimes, cheap media polls work alright for spotting trends over time- especially if they're aggregated- but otherwise, all the stats applied mean little or nothing.

Any foll can use SPSS or SAS or even Excel can show you math that "looks good," but i materially worthless.

20. Foreign Attacks Vs. the False Flag Operations of a fascist government:
I will believe that Muslim terrorists are targeting the American people when the attacks begin to look like the types of attacks that terrorists... aka desperately politically angry people without state or economic power... undertake.

Terrorist Attacks I'll believe: suicide bombers begin to come to the US to blow themselves up at malls, one or two at a time, every now and then. Someone with dynamite strapped to their bodies blows up a plane. Someone drives a truck full of fertilizer into an embassy. The types of attacks that are happening in Israel and Iraq and elsewhere. The types of attacks that desperate people have resorted to for a century.

Terrorist Attacks I won't believe: highly organized, high budget, sophisticated attacks that cause the collapse of massive skyscrapers, massive nuclear attacks, germ warfare attacks using biological weapons from U.S. laboratories. Massive attacks that occur on the exact day and time in the exact locations as the "preparatory exercises" of governments.
