No jail for cop in robbery of illegals
A Coconut Creek police officer who robbed undocumented immigrants during bogus traffic stops will plead guilty to a felony, but will not face prison.
BY ROBERTO SANTIAGO
rsantiago@MiamiHerald.com

Disgraced Coconut Creek police officer Michael Dunsavage won't be trading his police uniform for prison duds.

Thanks to a deal brokered through the Broward State Attorney's Office, Dunsavage, 26, who last week turned himself in on charges that he robbed four Guatemalan day laborers in July, is expected to be placed on 18 months of probation.

He will be arraigned before Broward Circuit Court Judge Marc Gold this morning in Fort Lauderdale.

Dunsavage agreed to plead guilty to one charge of grand theft -- a third-degree felony.

1. Pity a lawyer wouldn't give those victims some time so they could
pursue some sort of civil action. Restitution is insufficient, here, IMO. Those people were traumatized by an officer of the law, a servant and employee of the community. They deserve additional recompense, I believe. A substantial sum, too.

3. Wanna bet this r/w idiot savage will still be a police
officer after his probation? I'll bet on it, or that he will be allowed to become one again.

Point two-Police people are honored by the practice of reserving the very worst punishments for cop killers. Those who wear, proudly, the uniform that distinguishes them from civilians, as well as all other public servants, are supposed to be held to a higher standard than all others.

This deserves special attention when we start recovering some sanity in public office. Dispensers and planners of the law must be honored appropriately but must be punished far, far more severely for an infraction that anyone else would suffer the standard punishment for.

5. If you read the article..
... I think you'll agree that it's damn unlikely this guy will ever work in law enforcement again.

1) his police certification is being revoked.

2) he is now a convicted felon.

I'm with you in that I think he should have gotten some time. LE officials should be held to a higher, not lower standard of conduct. But I do believe this guy's career is over. And I won't be all that surprised if he breaks probation, at which point he WILL go to jail.

6. You're right.
Apparently I had a brain fart while I was reading and missed the point. One's attitude can be so blinding as cause one to miss the forest. Thanks for setting me straight.

One of the benefits of the massive computerization we are going through has been the tracking of people, state to state. Previously, medical personnel, LE personnel, and many other callings were not so assiduously followed and lots of miscreants managed to get a fresh start, multiple times, to continue their profligacy. Some, unfortunately too many, still fall "through the cracks."

7. You're not alone..

That's been known to happen to me from time to time. Keeping one's reason in the face of outrage is not easy for many of us. Peace:)

11. Too pretty for prison, is he?
Took $770 from four guys who work literally hand-to-mouth at the crappiest, shittiest jobs you can imagine. I wonder which church former officer Dunsavage attends regularly?
