Massachusetts: Iraq question to be on Nov. 7 ballot
Members of the South Shore Peace Forum have collected enough signatures on a petition calling for the immediate end of the war in Iraq to place a non-binding referendum on the Nov. 7 ballot. Sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee (Quaker) and United for Justice With Peace, the question will appear on the Nov. 7 ballot in the 3rd Plymouth District, covering Hingham, Hull, Cohasset and North Scituate, as well as on ballots in 139 cities and towns statewide.

On Nov. 7 voters in 139 cities and towns across the length and breadth of Massachusetts will vote on the following question:

Shall the State Representative from this district be instructed to vote in favor of a resolution calling upon the President and Congress of the United States to end the war in Iraq immediately and bring all United States military forces home from Iraq?

In a massive volunteer effort this spring and summer, citizens from one end of the state to the other collected the thousands of certified signatures needed to place this non-binding referendum on the war on the November ballot in 36 state representative districts across Massachusetts. For the first time Massachusetts voters will have the opportunity to officially register their position on the war.

2. Wouldn't that be a resolution, not a referendum?
A referendum is when the action of a legislative body is put to a public vote, either at the behest of the legislature or the demand of the people.
