Nelson endorsed by Republican Principi

BY JOSEPH MORTON

WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

WASHINGTON - Sen. Ben Nelson's re-election bid received the backing Thursday of a former member of President Bush's Cabinet.

Anthony Principi, who served as Bush's secretary of veterans affairs from January 2001 to January 2005, endorsed Nelson, a Democrat, in Lincoln.

Principi is now head of government relations for Pfizer Inc. and has served as chairman of the Base Realignment and Closure Commission. He also is on the boards of directors for Mutual of Omaha and Perot Systems.

Principi said that he worked with Nelson when the senator was a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee and that he could sense Nelson's concern for the well-being of veterans and their families.

1. Kick him out of the party....
How dare any democrat from a conservative state stray from the party line...

How dare he!!!!!

Every Democrat must march lock step with our leaders....

2. I can't stand Ben Nelson's voting record
But, I also acknowledge that he's from Nebraska -- not that Nebraskans are bad people, but they are more conservative than the states on the coast.
I figure this is one we suck up and be grateful that he has a D next to his name.

on note: The thing that irks me the most about Nelson is his voting record is more conservative than Hagels is.

3. Being a Nebraskan and conservative is kinda new
If I'm not mistaken J.J. Exon was a democrat, Bob Kerry, Omaha mayor, Mike Fahey whom I personally met is a democrat. Me, I'm a democrat.

Have fun all...
Paul

10. What happened that brought that about?
I've read several posts from Nebraskans who say the same thing you do, but no one ever says why this happened. How did Nebraska get to be like Utah and Idaho? Or is the image of exceedingly conservative Nebraska just a myth?

6. Just because he says he is a Democrat doesn't mean he is
What Democratic ideals does he support? Name me just one if you can. He votes with the Republicans on virtually every issue especially if the issue is close...

He voted for the minimum wage increase, most Republicans didn't.

A vote for Nelson is a vote for a Democratic majority.

9. Exactly

Nelson isn't my favorite Democrat -- his support of repealing the estate tax infuriates me -- but he's still way better than any Republican the Nebraska GOP is currently offering up. We need his "D".

12. also opposes drilling in ANWR
and opposes "fair tax" He's pretty 'balls to the wall' against illegal immigration and opposes any kind of amnesty as far as I can tell. The list of issues he is supportive of democrats on is a short one, but much longer than any repug except possibly Chaffee

4. Ben Nelson looks GREAT to someone represented by Trent Lott and
Thad Cochran. Hell, Nelson and Hegal look like liberals compared to my asshole senators.

5. The republican endorsed the Democrat - that is a good thing
It is not Nelson endorsing Principi.

And seriously folks Nebraska is different than Connecticut.

11. I'll take Nelson and Hagel if you'll take McConnell & Bunning.
The more Dems the better chance for our dems to take back the Congress and then we can see about who might be better, if anyone.

13. Pro-war, pro-life 'democrats'. And some people wonder why 3rd parties
are growing in strength. I know I could never cast my vote for such a 'democrat'.
