WAUSAU, Wis. - There's a Democrat in western Wisconsin who wants to be his state's Ned Lamont — trying to kick a fellow Democrat out of Congress for being too supportive of the Iraq war.
But there's a big difference. Unlike Lamont in Connecticut, Chip DeNure of La Crosse is no millionaire, and he acknowledges that his bid to oust five-term U.S. Rep. Ron Kind (news, bio, voting record) and make the Sept. 12 primary race a referendum on U.S. policy in Iraq is a long shot.
But someone had to do it, given that keeping U.S. troops in Iraq beyond next summer is "totally insane," the 57-year-old state probation officer said Wednesday.
"If Chip DeNure, who has run for local office five times and never has won, if somehow a miracle could happen and he could defeat a five-term incumbent on the issue of the war in Iraq, what a message that sends to the entire political establishment," DeNure said in a telephone interview from his home.
