GOP businessman seeks Granholm supporters
DeVos campaign predicts effort won't have much impact.

KATHY BARKS HOFFMAN
Associated Press Writer

LANSING -- Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm got a boost Thursday from a Charlevoix businessman who has started a group called Republicans for Granholm.

Gil Ziegler, 68, said he wants to see Republicans keep control of the state House and Senate and win other statewide offices. But when it comes to a choice between GOP gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos and Granholm, he's voting Democratic.

"As an automotive supplier, no one needs to tell me that Michigan has taken some hard hits in its manufacturing economy," said Ziegler, who owns Alken-Ziegler, a privately held metal forming and machining company with offices in Kalkaska and Livonia, where Ziegler also has a home.

Kilpatricks come out strongly for Granholm
Detroit backing will be needed in November election

August 25, 2006

"Governor Granholm has strategies in place to bring us through this difficult period, with a stronger and more diverse economy in the future," he added. Ziegler could list only a few adherents so far but thinks voter-rich Oakland County could be fertile territory for his group.

Leading the cheers was Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who has had some tense relationships with Granholm. But on Thursday, Kilpatrick and his mother, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, flanked the governor on stage. And unity was on everyone's lips.

After the mayor introduced the governor, the two posed for the standard hands clasped and arms hoisted photo.

"I'm the governor for all of Michigan and Michigan is not successful unless Detroit is successful," Granholm said. "Nothing should come between Detroit and Michigan but a comma."

Granholm widens lead over DeVos

Granholm widens lead over DeVos

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A statewide poll released Wednesday showed Democrat Gov. Granholm leading Republican challenger Dick DeVos 49 percent to 42 percent in a statewide poll. The survey of 600 likely voters by Lansing-based EPIC-MRA was the first time voters were asked about any third-party candidates, but not all third-party candidates were included in the poll.

The poll was conducted Monday and Tuesday for a consortium made up of The Detroit News and television stations WXYZ in Southfield, WOOD in Grand Rapids, WILX in Lansing and WJRT in Flint. It had a sampling error margin of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

An EPIC-MRA poll conducted Aug. 9-14 showed the race was tighter, with 50 percent of likely voters saying they’d vote for Granholm and 47 percent choosing DeVos.

2. Great news. I don't think most people realize how critical this race is.
DeVos has such close ties with the pretzelnut et al. I believe there is a larger plan involved with his future, dependent on his winning this election.
If anyone doesn't believe this is just a stepping stone for DeVos, they should check this out.
From HeardOnTheHill on Democratic Underground in the Michigan forum:
"The fact that Dick DeVos has already registered the domain names www.devosforsenate.com and www.devosforpresident.com might give us an indication as to what he has planned for himself. As President Clinton said, it is imperative that we stop him now, in Michigan, and end his political career before it starts."

For people who are not familiar with DeVos here are a few links to give you an idea of what he is really all about.

(MI - Gov) Doctrine of Dick DeVos (R Candidate)
by Hector Solon
Fri Aug 04, 2006 at 12:34:58 PM PDT
Cross-posted at MichiganLiberal.

The citizens and voters of Michigan owe it to themselves to become fully informed about the inner workings of Republican Dick DeVos as they make their choice and cast their votes in November.

Who is Dick DeVos and why does he want to be elected governor of Michigan?

The first and most obvious question:

Why does Dick with all those billions at his disposal--who lives the life of a jet setter with all the accoutrements (complete entrée to private jets, helicopters, ocean-going racing yachts, four palatial homes, a private Caribbean island, etc.) want to become governor of a state he portrays is in a crisis of historic proportions?

Secondly, the following questions:

What does the public know about DeVos' history, his political involvement and his specific issues? Are there critical concerns about Dick's agendas and his views on social and moral questions that should alarm or concern us as citizens?

>more on the DeVos Doctrine

Religious right connections:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/8/11/14245/7863
In "The Doctrine of Dick DeVos" some of the elements of the DeVos Doctrine were listed. However, in order to understand any doctrine the founding principles and philosophy (in this case better described as a strangely twisted "theology") need to be thoroughly examined and explored.
While the real objectives of the DeVos Doctrine are basically simple self-enrichment and profit, the Doctrine and Dick DeVos for Governor campaign in Michigan are infused with a special sort of Christian Fundamentalist rhetoric and the ambitions of political power using organizations within the Christian Right, many of which were setup and financed directly by the DeVos Family for their select purposes and coordinated with other groups with like minded agendas and goals. They form a cooperative network of burrowing ideologues and market fundamentalists.

>snip
(This is I think DeVos in a nutshell...from the above article)
Conservative profiteers, like Dick DeVos have only one true objective: the harvesting of public funding and tax revenues from governments and tax programs, as well as related non-governmental organizations (NGOs) they pretend to hate. These organizations are not primarily formed to promote their religious views and agenda, which are secondary goals; they are formed to sustain and maintain a constant flow of public funds from public projects and programs to support their own enterprises and projects for personal power and profit.

>more

and one last one (I have a bumper sticker someone made with their site name-gets a wide variety of responses here in Michigan!)

I really wish this contest was getting more attention.
