Time to play, time to march (Bush's day in Maine)
KENNEBUNKPORT — President Bush upheld his reputation as a high-energy vacationer Friday, a day when the commander in chief both ventured out with his mountain bicycle and got in some saltwater fishing before lunch.

Meanwhile, organizers of a protest march planned today said they also stayed busy, fielding phone calls from across the nation and making final preparations for a rally expected to draw hundreds of people.

But the president might have gotten an earlier start. His motorcade departed Walker's Point at 7 a.m. in a light rain and drove out to the Massabesic Experimental Forest, a 3,600-acre tract of federally owned land in Alfred and Lyman. Apparently the president went for a bicycle ride. A bulletin from the press pool that follows the president said the motorcade was carrying bicycle equipment, but reporters were not allowed to follow the president into the forest.

About 11 a.m., the president made another expedition from Walker's Point, this time aboard the family boat, the Fidelity III. Equipped with three 275-horsepower outboard motors, the boat is known as one of the speediest on the coast. Michael Dee of Windham, who for the last two days has stood on Ocean Avenue near the Bush compound with a sign advocating the legalization of marijuana, said the president didn't hold back on the throttle as he headed out.

1. Excellent fair and objective article. I enjoyed the description of the
planned protest:

Protesters were almost as active as they prepared for a four-mile march through Kennebunkport to demonstrate their opposition to the war in Iraq. All along Ocean Avenue, peace symbols were tacked onto utility poles.

Bruce Gagnon of Brunswick, one of the protest organizers, said he spent the day fielding phone calls from national news media and from people across the country expressing support. Gagnon said a 70-year-old woman in Harpswell called to say she had never been to a protest before. He said she is making a sign saying ''Grandmothers for Peace'' and plans to attend today.

Gagnon said there was no way to predict accurately the size of the crowd, but he was certain it would be in the hundreds.

>snip

Gagnon said the rally is directed not just at the president but also at members of Congress, including the Maine delegation, who have supported funding the war. ''We're critical of all of them, not just Bush,'' he said.

2. "**He's a high-energy vacationer."
- the singularly appropriate response when asked to say something - anything? - one thing? positive about the slug.

from the article:

Gagnon said a 70-year-old woman in Harpswell called to say she had never been to a protest before. He said she is making a sign saying ''Grandmothers for Peace'' and plans to attend today.<<

I send them my best and a huge thank you!

3. So much for 'no wake zones'
"the president didn't hold back on the throttle as he headed out."

No wake zones are usually in effect in harbor and within 100 yards of shoreline, so much for "rules"

8. The Bushes are known for rude boating behavior.
One of my brother's friends was nearly swamped by a boat driven by one of the Bushes a few years back.

Most of the harbor is essential closed to boats while the family is a play so there's no need to maintain a no wake zone. Because the Secret Service needs to sweep the area and set up a security zone ahead of time when the Bushes are in town the other recreational users are pretty much out of luck.
