Chavez: Venezuela's U.N. Bid Thriving
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said his country is gaining broad support in its bid for a U.N. Security Council seat, even as the United States tries to persuade governments to vote against Venezuela.

Speaking by phone from China on Sunday, Chavez told Venezuelan state television that his government is scoring ``big victories'' in its effort to obtain a rotating seat on the Security Council. He noted that Chinese President Hu Jintao endorsed Venezuela's campaign on Thursday, and said other countries in areas from the Caribbean to Africa have also pledged their backing.

``I am sure that support is going to continue growing,'' Chavez told state television, speaking from the eastern Chinese city of Jinan.

U.S. officials, alarmed by Chavez's deepening ties with countries like Iran and North Korea, are backing Guatemala for the U.N. seat instead. The race is expected to be decided by the General Assembly in a secret ballot in October.

1. Looks like Dubya had better get Diebold to tabulate the vote.

I doubt if this will get much objective reporting here behind the plastic curtain. Recommended: #1.

2. He made sure OPEC would side with the Euro.
Never should have pissed this Chavez guy off, bad idea. To bad the CIA has been purged by Cheney. Can't have them working for The People. Same goes for the JD and the FBI. Just doing all the wrong things and making the wrong people mad. Sad.

7. Venezuela is the leader of the international progressives.
That's a fact. France isn't. Russia and China won't even stand up for the third world. Only a handful of states do so. Venezuela's model is very important, and presages the emergences of a new democratic camp in the world.

10. Not worth very much, i think
The US invested a lot in Guatamala, and it still hasn't even a chance of recovering from that. That's just one example.
If the Chinese govt doesn't care about its own people being exploited by US corporations, why would they really care about the poor in Africa? It's no coincidence that China is most favored trading partner, and Venezuela is not.
