Mexican leftist candidate wins in volatile region (Sabinas)
Official results give governor’s race to hopeful in Chiapas state
The candidate of Mexico's top leftist force won the governor's race in the volatile southern state of Chiapas, edging a hopeful backed by President Vicente Fox's party by about 6,300 votes, electoral officials said Sunday.

Following a tense, two-hour session, Chiapas' electoral council announced the official results from the Aug. 20 election, giving Juan Sabinas, of the Democratic Revolution Party, 553,270 votes, compared to 546,988 for Jose Antonio Aguilar, who was running with the Institutional Revolutionary Party, which controlled Mexico's presidency from 1929 until 2000.

Institutional Revolutionary officials immediately said they would challenge the results in court.

Aguilar, a 56-year-old former federal senator, was also supported by Fox's conservative National Action Party as the result of a last-minute alliance to try to defeat Sabines, a 38-year-old former Tuxtla Gutierrez mayor. He has claimed the election was tainted by government meddling, vote buying and other irregularities

2. How much you want to bet...

That it would have been stolen but for the fear of throngs of protestors.

5. Don't expect honest treatment at the hands of the establishment.
That goes without saying.

6. same old technique...
Even when the article is somewhat positive about the candidate, they still use the word "leftist." It's a subtle dig, kinda like using "regime" to describe any government that we don't agree with. The librul media strikes again! They don't have a similar term for right-wingers, do they?? **crickets**

They will rule on the recount today

Mexico election court to rule on recount

Mexico City.– Mexico's electoral court will give its verdict on Monday on claims of foul play in the July 2 presidential election, and is widely expected to reject leftists' allegations that the vote was rigged against them.

The court will hold a public session at 8 a.m. (1300 GMT) to give the results of a recount this month at 9 percent of polling stations, a court spokesman said on Sunday.

It will also rule on complaints of misconduct at tens of thousands of polling stations where it decided against recounts, and a wider complaint by the left that funding from business leaders and vocal support from President Vicente Fox for the ruling conservative party's campaign warrant annulling the election.
