I live in Indiana, and even from here it's clear that Jeb Bush and Florida can handle pretty much everything a hurricane can offer with minimal help from FEMA. That clearly was not the case for Louisiana, even if we ignore the unusual devastation in New Orleans.

Charley was not a major storm (Weak category one when it left Cuba), it slammed into us as a category 4! Please forgive me If I don't share your optimism.

Plus once it passes over Cuba part of it will be over land. IF it turned left out of Cuba and went over the Gulf then IMHO it could get big.

Although it's been downgraded, Ernesto can still pose a threat. This declaration shouldn't be used as an opportunity to bash Bushes or the GOP, nor even as a vehicle for cynicism ("oh, yeah, since Katrina, NOW they act . . ."). Jeb Bush did the right thing.

22. i wonder what the hundreds (if not thousands) of homeowners whose roofs |
|
are still damaged because insurances have been slow in paying up, or because materials have not been available have to say about that...wouldn't jeb bush as governor have some oversight into insurances and into the flow of repair materials into the state and affected counties? I for one think that Jeb Bush is as much of an asshole as his brother and the rest of their family.

That was a no brainer. I was in one of the hardest hit area's of Charley. My roof was replaced in a reasonable time, till it was replaced I was put up into a Hotel by my Insurance company.

32. you are evidently in an out of the ball park income bracket, able to |
|
afford decent insurance. not so in the case of so many blue tarp roofs throughout florida, this county. you are certainly under the jeb bush umbrealla protection. not so so many others whose insurances decided to cancel them after the storm hit. we are living in a two tiered society. those who have and those who have not. the bushes have certainly helped to make the burrowing lines deeper.

i have a friend on disability as well. her disability is her only income. it hardly takes care of her needs: medical care, medications, food on her table, clothing, bandages for open wound care ... cuts to the medicaid that covers her, rent, utilities...food stamps? i don't even know if she is eligible.

15. The State of Emergency was only as a training tool. |
|
Section 1.
Based upon the foregoing, I hereby find that the public welfare requires that the Florida National Guard train to support law-enforcement personnel and emergency-management personnel in the event of civil disturbances or natural disasters and to provide training support to law-enforcement personnel and community-based organizations relating to counter drug operations.
Section 2.
I hereby delegate to The Adjutant General of the State of Florida all necessary authority, within approved budgetary appropriations or grants, to order members of the Florida National Guard into active service, as defined by Section 250.27, Florida Statutes, for the purpose of training to support law-enforcement personnel and emergency-management personnel in the event of civil disturbances or natural disasters and to provide training support to law-enforcement personnel and community-based organizations relating to counter drug operations.
Section 3.
The Florida National Guard may order selected members on to state active duty for service to the State of Florida pursuant to Section 250.06(4), Florida Statutes, to assist FDLE in performing port security training and inspections. Based on the potential massive damage to life and property that may result from an act of terrorism at a Florida port, the necessity to protect life and property from such acts of terrorism, and inhibiting the smuggling of illegal drugs into the State of Florida, the use of the Florida National Guard to support FDLE in accomplishing port security training and inspections is "extraordinary support to law enforcement" as used in Section 250.06(4), Florida Statutes.
Section 4.
The Adjutant General shall not place members of the Florida National Guard into active service for longer than necessary to accomplish the purposes declared herein.
Section 5.
This Executive Order supersedes Executive Order Number 01-17. Executive Order Number 01-17 is hereby revoked.
Section 6.
This Executive Order shall remain in full force and effect until the earlier of its revocation or June 30, 2003.

What foresight. Executive order 01-17 was already in effect and scheduled to remain in force until June 30, 2003. http://sun6.dms.state.fl.us/eog_new/eog/orders/2001/january/eo2001-17-01-19-01.htmlFor some unknown reason, John Ellis Bushbush revoked the standing order on September 7th, 2001 and replaced it with Executive Order 01-261. http://www.state.fl.us/eog_new/eog/orders/2001/september/eo2001-261-09-07-01.htmlNote to OP: apologies for going off-topic.

30. Thank you. I know far too many people who have houses that are still a |

mess after Ivan and Dennis. These are people who should have qualified for FEMA aid and got nothing. Help after hurricanes is largely hit or miss. Some people get lucky; other people just get forgotten.
