McCain would consider Bob Jones University invitation
Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. - U.S. Sen. John McCain riled Bob Jones University leaders in South Carolina's nasty 2000 GOP presidential primary by criticizing the Christian fundamentalist school - known for its ban on interracial dating and its anti-Roman Catholic views - and George W. Bush for speaking there.

Now McCain says he would consider speaking at the school himself.

"I can't remember when I've turned down a speaking invitation. I think I'd have to look at it," he told The State newspaper.

McCain, R-Ariz., says he would have to look at Bob Jones University's latest policy statements. "I understand they have made considerable progress," he said.

John McCain is here. John McCain, John McCain, what a maverick! Somebody find out what fork he used on his salad, because I guarantee you it wasn't a salad fork. This guy could have used a spoon! There's no predicting him. By the way, Senator McCain, it's so wonderful to see you coming back into the Republican fold. I have a summer house in South Carolina; look me up when you go to speak at Bob Jones University. So glad you've seen the light, sir.
Thanks: Daily Kos

Just like the rest of the Pukes. No integrity. I guess his previous comments about BJU are "inoperative."

7. So McCain abandoned his anti-miscegenation position....
<snip>
Miscegenation (Latin miscere "to mix" + genus "kind") is the mixing of different ethnicities or races, especially in marriage, cohabitation, or sexual relations. Interracial marriage or interracial dating may be more common in contemporary usage. While the English word has a history of ethnocentrism, the Spanish and French words, mestizaje and métissage, connote a positive melting-pot of cultures.

"Miscegenation" comes from the Latin miscere, "to mix" and genus, "race". While the etymology of the term is not pejorative, historically, "race mixing" between black and white people was widely taboo, and, in much of U.S. South, was even illegal when the term was introduced in the U.S. in 1863.<1> The term frequently was used in the context of ethnocentric or racist attitudes and laws against interracial sexual relations and intermarriage. <more>

McCain's Liberty weekend
Posted 2:10 pm | Printer Friendly

John McCain's much-discussed appearance at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University is tomorrow morning. Chances are, more reporters will be on hand for this than any other commencement in Liberty history. At a minimum, the political world will be watching to see the extent to which McCain is willing to sell out for a shot at the presidency.

Just as a refresher, let's not forget that less than six years ago, McCain (accurately) described Falwell as an "agent of intolerance" who had a "corrupting influence" on politics in America. A day later, McCain said Falwell had an "evil influence" over the Republican Party.

Now that he wants the religious right's support in the 2008 primaries, McCain has radically changed course and reached out to clowns like Falwell, leading to tomorrow's commencement address at Liberty. It's an offensive move for McCain to lend Falwell credibility by appearing alongside him publicly, but the speech, in and of itself, is only part of the problem.

In fact, I'd argue that the uproar over the graduation address misses the forest for the trees. Every time McCain is asked about the appearance, which is frequently, he explains that he speaks to college audiences all the time, whether he agrees with the school's policies and/or leadership or not. Fine.

But the discussion misses the point.

First, it's not just the appearance, it's what he says while he's there. Ted Kennedy, of all people, appeared at Liberty 20 years ago and delivered a remarkable speech in defense of tolerance and respect for diversity. Will McCain have the courage to do the same? It's unlikely.

In 2000, Bush caused a controversy by appearing at Bob Jones University. At the time, McCain said he does not mind "going any place where people have views that I find hateful" — but "when I go there, I'm going to tell them exactly what I think of them." He added that he would have told the Bob Jones audience that "they ought to get out of the 16th century and into the 21st century."

BJU is not exactly the same as Liberty, but hate is hate. McCain can tell Falwell and his followers "exactly what he thinks of them" tomorrow, but I have a hunch it will be a friendly message.

Second, it's also worth remembering that Falwell is not only a nut, he's an anti-American demagogue who has said, among other things, that the United States "deserved" the 9/11 attacks. Yes, McCain should have better judgment than to speak at Falwell's school, but the far bigger outrage is when McCain told a national television audience that he no longer believes Falwell is an agent of intolerance.

McCain will probably deliver a pretty standard set of remarks tomorrow and the event will fade from memory, but McCain's shameless transformation from centrist "maverick" to right-wing ideologue has more to do with months of careful positioning, and less to do with one silly speech at Liberty University.

11. How did the ghost of Captain Ahab get inside modern-day John McCain's
body?

The ghost mistranslates 'white whale' with "White House" but the obsession part is consistent.

Very spooky dissolution of a personality. That adage about Power as the great Corrupter sure rings true.

17. McCain Panders!
I have strongly disliked him ever since he endorsed Shrub, even after Shrub's campaign's dirty tricks against him. When it comes down to it, McCain toes the party line. He's a weakling!
