Bush sees renewal after Katrina

By JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press Writer 3 minutes ago

BILOXI, Miss. -
President Bush returned Monday to the first scene he saw a year ago of Hurricane Katrina's devastation, and declared "a sense of renewal" in the region still struggling to come back from the storm's battering.

"Amazing what the world looked like then and what it looks like now," Bush said, marveling at the air conditioning and electrical service in the newly constructed home visible behind him. "People can't imagine what the world looked like then."

When Bush first saw the neighborhood, it was littered by debris of all sizes, cars in trees and homes battered to bits.

Bush said "there's still challenges." Other parts of the neighborhood, which is only rebuilt in patches, and a woman he consoled on a trip here last year, demonstrated just that. Sought out by the White House to meet Bush again, she said before his remarks that she has come far — but not far enough.

1. There he goes again with that "world" crap.
Last year, he called the Gulf Coast "this part of the world" and this year he's saying "what the world looked like then." :grr:
Why can't he call it the Gulf Coast of the USA? :grr: What goes on in his head that he can spew out crap like this?

6. shielding him from more freely interacting with residents.
Don Powell, Bush's federal Gulf Coast coordinator, also warned in an interview that no more money would flow to the region until there is proof that what has been approved is being spent well.

Bush's itinerary looks a lot like previous trips, many of them criticized as featuring too much staged contact with supportive locals and overly dominated by meetings with officials. The White House released almost no information on where Bush was visiting until minutes before he was too arrive, in part to lessen cumbersome security needs. But the practice also has the result of further shielding him from more freely interacting with residents.

Bush also was visiting a Gulfport company that builds and repair boats before ending in New Orleans at dinner with state and local officials. On Wednesday, he shifts gears, and is to appear at political fundraisers in Arkansas and Tennessee.

Bush says Katrina recovery just starting

By DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press Writer 57 minutes ago

BILOXI, Miss. -
President Bush said Monday the huge job of rebuilding from Hurricane Katrina was just beginning a year after the massive storm but expressed hope that the $110 billion of help sent from Washington would be enough.

Trying to erase the black mark left on his presidency by the administration's sluggish response to Katrina, Bush returned to the first scene he saw a year ago of the storm's devastation.

........

"A year ago, I committed our federal government to help you," Bush said. "I said, `We have a duty to help the local people recover and rebuild,' and I meant what I said."

........Bush focused on the positive, but acknowledged that much remains to be done.

"It's an anniversary, but it's not an end," Bush said. "Frankly it's just the beginning."

14. Suck it, you weasel.
You promised all sorts of shit almost a year ago, alone and backlit in blue in a dead city that looked like a sound stage, after your PR people realized how badly you "looked" after the rest of the world bore witness to the suffering and dying of so many poor black people in NO and so many "regular looking" white folks in MS. :sarcasm: Too bad we all saw your sweating, lying back as you slunk back onto your environmentally-unfriendly, overprotected, overinsulated Air Force One. Too bad we had all seen the pictures of you yukking it up eating cake and pretending to play a guitar while people drowned and died of heat exhaustion.

You mean it now just as much as you meant it then. "So long as you're president," things will remain the same, and that will please you just fine.

It looks like downtown Fairfax, VA from all the swimming pools, the uninterrupted power supply and the full service fast food courts. Think you might want to invest some of our money....IN OUR OWN FUCKING COUNTRY YOU DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDLED ASSWIPE?

16. Katrina
Great article about how Bush/Rove at first intentionally ignored Katrina so that the news media would focus on the storm damage rather than on Iraq, which was going particularly poorly. It backfired, of course.

20. Done by a New Deal Democrat
Of course it worked. It was a government program run and funded by people who see government efforts in a major event as part of the solution, not part of the problem.

And Truman spend a good part of WW2 hunting down war profiteers amd tossing them in jail. Kinda the opposite of Bush, I can't help but notice.

My boss at my job is a retired lieutenant colonel from the army. Served in the infantry in Vietnam. Seven years enlisted, 28 years officer. Also served as a colonet in Bosnia as part of NATO. I told him that HE should be in charge of FEMA or DHS. He said he wansn't qualified. I told him he's a damn sight more qualified than Brownie or The Skull. Hell, I told him I was more qualified than the Two Stooges, and I've never served a day in my life. Just played a lot of Civ II. And I don't worry so much if I should have my breakfast interrupted or my sleeved rolled up for a photo op.
