Cheney to veterans: U.S. safer because of Bush policies

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Policies initiated by the Bush administration are the reason the United States hasn't been attacked since the Sept. 11 strikes five years ago, Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday.

Speaking to the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Reno, the vice president defended the war in Iraq as necessary in the overall battle against terrorism and reiterated the administration's position that U.S. troops would not withdraw until Iraqi forces were able to maintain order and stability.

...

"To have come this far without another attack is no accident," Cheney said, who credited "sound policies by the president" for protecting the country.

Speaking to about 6,000 delegates, Cheney also criticized as "just dead wrong" a federal court ruling that struck down the president's warrantless, domestic wiretapping program as unconstitutional.

"We're confident it will be reversed on appeal," he said.

15. I think Salt Lake City was last year's venue (2005)
Reno had the honor of hosting the VFW convention this year. Maybe we can still send all the chickenhawk veteran wannabe VFW types to Salt Lake City. ;)

4. That's based on your extensive military experience, Mr. Cheney?
Oooh, listen to the crickets chirp!

Why is the VFW inviting this draft-dodger to address their convention?

Oh, and by the way Deadeye Dick, we have indeed been attacked since September 11. Anthrax? And you've made as much progress in tracking down that killer as you have in tracking down Osama bin Laden.

14. As long as we're not mentioning things
How about the incredible number of bogus terror alerts and overhyped arrests out of this administration? While it's certainly bad to fail to prevent a terrorist attack, as this administration undeniably did on September 11, it's also quite bad to keep the public in a constant state of false alarm with breathless announcements of terrorist activities that are neither terroristic nor much of an activity.

7. Cheney would get more applause speaking to somebody he hasn't screwed
such as Kennyboy Lay. Oh, wait, he's dead. So that would leave... Dick Cheney as the only person on Earth who Cheney has helped.

9. Veteran to Cheney: Shut your five-time draft-dodging yap
He didn't have the nads to strap it on during Vietnam (unlike, say, my aunt, my brother and, to a much lesser degree, me), so I look at anything coming out of his filthy, traitorous, bigoted, hate-filled and cowardly mouth as just more balloon juice.
Do us all a favor, Dick, and just unplug that Die-Hard they keep you hooked up to. That is all.

18. Thank you for the thought, Monkeyman
But, in my humble case, no "welcome home" is necessary. I entered the service in January 1974 and spent my time pounding a teletype for the United States Army Communications Command. I never got closer to Vietnam than Hampton, Virginia and the only blood I shed came from a paper cut (which really, REALLY hurt).
My brother went in in October 1972 and spent his time at Fort Carson, Colorado. His military police company was on the short list to be rotated into Vietnam when they cancelled his/their orders. It was a near thing.
And my aunt, sarge43 here, spent 22 years in the Air Force -- including the Vietnam War from beginning to end. A welcome home to her would be much in order.
John
All that said, I DO have both my VVA and VVAW cards (though I barely earned them) and, better, my old all-green M-65 model field jacket, with my unit patch and name tag and everything. It's one of my proudest possessions -- only because I earned it the hard way and because thimbledicks like Cheney don't have one unless they purchased it at an Army-Navy store. This liberal has no problem waving said Army-issued jacket at the neocons and other assorted Nazis of my acquaintance and asking where theirs is. Shuts 'em right the hell up.

17. All Moutlh - No Spine
This vet has no use for draft dodgers and deserters. Ever wonder who got called up in cheney and bush's place, and what their fates were?
Any veteran who respects and believes cheney and bush can kiss my patriotic Navy ass. They are the problem, not the solution.
