John Mark Karr released
DNA of suspect in JonBenet murder no match in case, prosecutors say

BREAKING NEWS
Updated: 23 minutes ago

BOULDER, Colo. - Prosecutors abruptly dropped their case against John Mark Karr in the slaying of JonBenet Ramsey and released him Monday, saying DNA tests failed to put him at the crime scene despite his repeated insistence he killed the 6-year-old beauty queen.

“The warrant on Mr. Karr has been dropped by the district attorney,” public defender Seth Temin said outside the jail, a few hours before he was released. “They are not proceeding with the case.”

Boulder County District Attorney Mary Lacy’s office did not return repeated calls from The Associated Press.......

“We’re deeply distressed by the fact that they took this man and dragged him here from Bangkok, Thailand, with no forensic evidence confirming the allegations against him and no independent factors leading to a presumption that he did anything wrong,” Temin said.

I said to my wife the other day that I didn't think he did it. She asked why I thought that and I said that there was something hinky with him and my instinct said he didn't do it.
I always trust my instincts.

22. DNA test,? How about the family's alibi?
Karr's family insisted he was with them at the time of the murder. They didn't need to do any DNA testing at all, they just had to check out the damn alibi. This whole affair stinks like a florida election.

59. yeah, beacause family members never lie to protect
yes, it was pretty obvious from day one that this twerp was lying, but that doesn't excuse the stupidity of your remark above.

I think it's safe to say that the responsible thing to do in a murder case is to at least run a DNA check on a fella who is insisting that he committed the crime. I'd put family statements to the media pretty far down on the list of 'evidence' for or against a suspect.

ps what makes you think checking an out-of-state alibi from 10 years ago is any easier that running an automated, virtually perfect test?

64. Very easy?
From what region of your ass are you pulling this knowledge?

It may be 'low tech,' but that does not equal 'easy' or 'accurate,' especially when you consider that those people who are providing the 10-year-old alibi are all biased and live 1000 miles away from the investigation.

Now compare that with doing a sure-fire, unbiased, scientific test that you have to do anyway. If you still feel the emphasis should have been on investigating biased alibis from people who've already sold Karr's movie and book rights, all I can say is that I'm happy that you spend your time typing away on the internet instead of actually mattering.

Anecdotal tales mean nothing here.

(Regardless, I don't think he did it. As soon as the details started to become clear, it seemed fairly obvious that this guy wasn't involved.)

I've heard he won't eb extradited to CA, and I've heard yes. But, regardless, they are all misdemeanor charges. You don't go to SQ on misdemeanors.

And, why is rape considered an apt punishment for ANYONE? That's sickening to me.

32. I thought he was answering for child molestation charges there.
Or was that in his past? I thought they were outstanding in California, but he was brought to Colorado because the Jon Benet case (murder) was more important.

I'm assuming the molestation charges are felonies and he would go to San Quentin. Which is far from a vacation resort, and I understand that child molesters are the lowest of the low in prison.

I don't for a minute think institutionalized rape is something to be encouraged or ignored, but that does not mean it won't happen. And if Karr is molesting kids, I have a real hard time drumming up more than token anger for his predictiment.

76. Zero molestation charges
Five misdemeanor child porn charges. He skipped bail, and was found guilty in absentia. CA lawyers say he will get time served (MAYBE a little time), probation, and sex offender registration. Also, they said no one is EVER extradited from another state for non-felony charges -- this is all showboating.

He is ill and skeevy and a creepo, but there is no evidence he ever molested a child.

53. I told DH on his extradition to the US...
..."he's just someone trying to get out of the Thai prison system; he'll get treated better over here." Unfortunately, it looks like I might have been on to something. :-(

78. Nope -- he wasn't extradited and he wasn't imprisoned in Thailand
He was deported after the US officials told the Thai officials Karr was wanted for murder.

86. I kinda thought he looked a bit like PeeWee Herman...
Well, maybe kinda like a cross between PeeWee (if he'd been tripping his ass off...) and Anthony Perkins when he was in Psycho...

55. I really thought
the Boulder DA would manufacture an "inconclusive" from the DNA, so they could have a trial where John Ramsey was on the stand without an attorney to save his ass, guess I was wrong. I guess the DA was just an idiot asshole.

62. Distract! Distract! Distract!
The media went right along with distracting the viewers from the REAL news - like a failing war in Iraq, softening economy, spiraling healthcare costs, etc.

74. I thought I read that Homeland Security arranged for one of Karr's first
press conferences. Wonder if that is true.

68. That doesn't help him any.
Everybody knows his name and what he looks like, and he'll be branded a murderer for the rest of his life. The fact that he didn't actually commit the crime he was accused of is immaterial. Even though he won't go to jail, he's already been "effectively" found guilty.

79. Yes
The next step is an extradition process back to California.

My question is, why did they make an arrest before the DNA tests were done? This whole thing stank from Day One.

81. Misdemeanor charges -- tried in absentia
Edited on Tue Aug-29-06 10:09 AM by LostinVA
He should get time served -- MAYBE a little time in a jail, not a prison.... as per CA lawyers on TV.

They also said no one is EVER extradited from another state for misdemeanor charges.
