Rumsfeld says terrorists manipulate media
http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/news/breaking_news/15383140.htm

FALLON NAVAL AIR STATION, Nev. - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Monday he is deeply troubled by the success of terrorist groups in "manipulating the media" to influence Westerners.

"That's the thing that keeps me up at night," he said during a question-and-answer session with about 200 naval aviators and other Navy personnel at this flight training base for Navy and Marine pilots.

... "What bothers me the most is how clever the enemy is," he continued, launching an extensive broadside at Islamic extremist groups which he said are trying to undermine Western support for the war on terror.

"They are actively manipulating the media in this country" by, for example, falsely blaming U.S. troops for civilian deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan, he said.

36. HE'S A FUCKING EVIL ASSCLOWN
TRY THIS ONE ON ASS CLOWN ITS MY FAVORITE:

A stray dog feeds on an Iraqi corpse. Marines are now hunting down stray animals grown fat on the flesh from corpses and which could harbor rabies Photo AFP/Cris Bouroncle.

FALLUJAH, Iraq - US troops fire off another volley of shots amid the trashed houses of Fallujah, hunting down new adversaries carrying a potentially deadly weapon that threatens to plague reconstruction efforts.

But this time the marines are not chasing down the insurgents who they defeated in a devastating assault on the city last month. Their quarry is stray animals grown fat on the flesh from corpses and who could harbor rabies.

The marines gather briefly over a pile of trash, one pointing across the dirt lot to a row of burned out homes where moments before a dog was seen loping for cover amid the ruined buildings.

"I think we wounded a couple and they took off that way," he said, as another marine pulled his quarry onto a ridge, its bloodied head rolling side to side in the dust.

13. Don't forget th Overt and Covert Operatives...
the political appointees ensconced through-out the U.S.G. that assisted in manipulating the public (yeah...the one's who don't shine to the possibility of accountability now or in the future.)

"Feith's Office of Special Plans (OSP) and the Pentagon Near East and South Asia (NESA) office:
"ey personnel who worked in both NESA and OSP were part of a broader network of neoconservative ideologues and activists who worked with other Bush political appointees scattered around the national-security bureaucracy to move the country to war, according to retired Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski, who was assigned to NESA from May 2002 through February 2003. The heads of NESA and OSP were Deputy Undersecretary William Luti and Abram Shulsky, respectively. Other appointees who worked with them in both offices included Michael Rubin, a Middle East specialist previously with the neoconservative American Enterprise Institute (AEI); David Schenker, previously with the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP); and Michael Makovsky; an expert on neocon icon Winston Churchill and the younger brother of David Makovsky, a senior WINEP fellow and former executive editor of pro-Likud Jerusalem Post. Along with Feith, all of the political appointees have in common a close identification with the views of the right-wing Likud Party in Israel."

21. ...Feith,........ yeah, Bingo.
-----Thank you for the recollection that it was Douglas Feith who managed the administration's primary disinformation and cherrypicking efforts. Feith had also been a long-time colleague of the infamous Ahmad Chalabi,.... The OSP was hastily disbanded, of course,... and Feith essentially disappeared. But he is among the most criminally-culpable members of the Bush administration....

33. Looks like Feith is teaching at Georgetown, as of May anyway.
http://rightweb.irc-online.org/profile/1146

Douglas Feith, the notorious former Pentagon official who has repeatedly been investigated for allegedly distorting prewar intelligence on Iraq, was hired by Georgetown University in May 2006 to teach a course on the Bush administration's strategy in the war on terror. Feith served as the deputy undersecretary of defense for policy, the number three position at the Pentagon, from July 2001 to August 2005.

Although Feith said he wanted to spend more time with his family, his resignation sparked widespread speculation among pundits that he was pressured to leave because of a number of then-ongoing investigations related to the administration's efforts to bolster support for the Iraq War. Juan Cole, history professor at the University of Michigan and author of the blog Informed Comment (juancole.com), wrote in January 2005, when Feith announced his resignation:

“Feith has been questioned by the FBI in relation to the passing by one of his employees of confidential Pentagon documents to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which in turn passed them to the Israeli Embassy. The Senate Intelligence Committee is also investigating Feith. There seems little doubt that he operated in the Pentagon in such a way as to produce false and misleading ‘intelligence,' that he created an entirely false impression of Iraqi weapons capabilities and ties to al-Qaida, and that he is among the chief facilitators of the U.S. war in Iraq. Feith is clearly resigning ahead of the possible breaking of major scandals concerning his tenure at the Department of Defense, which is among the more disgraceful cases of the misleading of the American people in American history.”

As of late June 2006, Feith has not been charged in connection to his work at the Pentagon, but he remains under investigation. The Department of Defense's inspector general continues to investigate whether the Office of Special Plans (OSP), a specialized outfit set up by Feith within the Pentagon to scrutinize intel on Iraq, deliberately skewed information about the regime of Saddam Hussein (New York Times, May 25, 2006).

snip>

Feith's work at the Pentagon drew widespread criticism from both in and outside government. Gen. Tommy Franks, the commander of the Iraq invasion, once referred to him as the “stupidest guy on the face of the earth.” And when Feith was given his teaching post at Georgetown, several dozen faculty and administrators signed a letter of protest, some accusing him of condoning torture and being guilty of war crimes. Responding to the criticism, Robert Gallucci, dean of Georgetown's School of Foreign Service and former State Department official, said: “I think the war in Iraq is a terrible mistake. But that is not the criteria for whom I bring to campus.” He added that the debate over Feith on campus “is what I want. The debate has begun. The debate, the disagreement—all that is good news” (New York Times, May 25, 2006).

Rummy was up before the camera going on and on about how horrible Saddam was. He went on to descripe how Saddam would imprison and torture people. I may have forgotten to mention that I'm watching Rumsferatu flapping his gums about Saddam's atrocities two or three days after the breaking Abu Ghraib story. The theatre was abuzz at the obvious display of irony.

Reuters seeks Pentagon probe on journalist's death

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Reuters news agency urged the U.S. military on Sunday to investigate the killing of one of its journalists by American troops in Baghdad a year ago.

An independent inquiry commissioned by Reuters concluded that the soldiers' shooting of television soundman Waleed Khaled on August 28 last year appeared "unlawful".

But the Pentagon has failed to respond to requests to review the local commander's ruling, which said the firing of shots at the car was "appropriate".

Rumsfeld's rantings are merely more perception management within the context of strategic influence from an illegal unitary executive's "administration" whose most loyal inner circle is dominated by universal fascists (Straussians).

We've discussed the US origins of criminal domestic psychological operations, disinfo, propaganda in plain language here at DU many times.

Here is a discussion from January of this year.

Yeah, certainly the death of 3,000 American citizens wouldn't do it.

Surely, you don't lie awake thinking of the thousands of brave US troops who will suffer physically the rest of their lives due to the injuries endured on your behalf.

I'm also pretty sure the thousands of "walking wounded" soldiers won't put a dent in your evening snooze.

And I know you don't toss and turn restlessly mourning the deaths of thousands of innocent Iraqi citizens.

But the "manipulating the media" by the "terrorist groups", an abstract idea, much like your "war on terror"...

"That's the thing that keeps me up at night."

57. Rumsfeld says Terrorists manipulating media
http://www.comcast.net/news/politics/index.jsp?cat=POLITICS&fn=/2006/08/29/464981.html

This bit struck me.
"The enemy is so much better at communicating," he added. "I wish we were better at countering that because the constant drumbeat of things they say _ all of which are not true _ is harmful. It's cumulative. And it does weaken people's will and lessen their determination, and raise questions in their minds as to whether the cost is worth it," he said alluding to Americans and other Westerners.

So essentially, the reasons I have questions about the war in Iraq is because the terrorists have been manipulating the media(not that this administration wouldn't know about media manipulation, of course). It wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction; the no bid contracts with Halliburton, the fact that our troops don't have body armor etc.

65. As always, Busheviks project their own evil onto others
How's the Office of Strategic Initiaves going there, Rummy? Is it functioning just as well under it's new name in it's new, secret building?

The loathing I have for these Bushevik scum, for ALL tyrants, is boundless.
