Man arrested in Death of Giuliani aide
By TOM HAYS , 08.30.2006, 01:35 PM

A homeless drug addict wanted in the killing of a former aide to Rudolph Giuliani was arrested after a chance encounter with detectives investigating the case, police said Wednesday.

The detectives were searching for records at an employment agency that had hired the suspect, Edwin Ramos, 26, when Ramos walked in seeking back-pay, police said.

Police would not say how they identified him as a suspect in the strangulation of Martin Barreto, 49, a one-time deputy press secretary at City Hall. But they alleged he made statements implicating himself in the killing and the theft of the victim's laptop computer, cell phone and keys.

Barreto's body was discovered on Aug. 21 on a bed at his home in Manhattan's Greenwich Village after a friend reported he wasn't responding to phone calls or knocks on his door. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide, saying an autopsy found he died from "asphyxia due to compression of the neck."

4. Sounds like it to me,
Why else would this bigshot politico have a twentysomething homeless druggie in his bedroom?

Assuming, of course, this wasn't a setup.

7. Second high profile gay man killed in NYC on the same day

Update on Martin Barreto, Murdered ex-Press Secretary for Rudy Guiliani; A Second High Profile Gay Man was Found Naked and Strangled in his NYC Suburban Home on the Same Day! NYC Police Say the Two Murders Are Not Connected
http://karenas.typepad.com/my_weblog/2006/08/update_on_marti.html

Martin Barreto, a former Deputy Press Secretary for Mayor Rudy Guiliani was murdered last week. His body was found in his apartment after he failed to show up to work at his public relations firm. Martin died of a crushed larynx, and because he was gay and has been reported by "neighbors" to have hired prostitutes in the past, the police labeled the case as one of "rough sex gone horribly wrong." http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/446651p-375936c.html

Now the police report that the only valuables missing from Martin's Greenwhich Village apartment are his laptop computer, keys and cell phone. His desktop computer was not stolen. Because of the missing laptop, "a source" says the "killer was may be one of the guys he picked up on the internet." They claim that the killer was careful and covering his tracks by stealing the laptop and cellphone. The keys, no explanation as to why the careful killer knicked the keys.

<snip>

Now a second high-profile man, David Webb, 44, and a chef at the Benjamin Hotel in NYC has been found naked and strangled to death in his Westchester County home on the same day that Martin Barreto was found. Police in Westchester County are cooperating with NYC police to see if the two murders could be connected. This story says the NYC police claim the two murders are NOT connected? What's going on here?

8. ..the keys...
Could the keys have been lifted to lock the door from the outside, when the killer left? I believe it was reported that the door was locked when officials arrived.
