Woman in JFK limo during shootings dies (Nellie Connally)
Edited on Sat Sep-02-06 07:05 PM by MaineDem
What a strange headline. Makes it sound like she was some unidentified passenger.

AUSTIN, Texas --Nellie Connally, the former Texas first lady who was riding in President Kennedy's limousine when he was assassinated, has died, a family friend said Saturday. The 87-year-old was the last living person who had been part of that fateful Dallas drive.

Connally, the widow of former Gov. John Connally, died late Friday at Westminster Manor in Austin, said Julian Read, who served as the governor's press secretary in the 1960s.

"Total surprise," he said. "She has been extremely active and vital the past few days and weeks. ... It's a shock to all of us."

Connally had said the most enduring image she had of the Nov. 22, 1963, assassination was of a mixture of blood and roses.

"It's the image of yellow roses and red roses and blood all over the car ... all over us," she said in a 2003 interview with The Associated Press. "I'll never forget it. ... It was so quick and so short, so potent."

5. That was a bizarre and unforgettable few days
First the assassination, then Oswald gets taken out and both events were on TV, then that gutwrenching funeral. My grandfather was four months from dying but he told me all about President Kennedy. I was ten at the time. He and my grandma (on my mom's side) were life long democrats.

7. I was in Europe, with sketchy access to TV
We got most of the news from radio and newspapers and word of mouth. Very quaint. TV didn't have much film either. The entire European continent was devastated, in tears. Catholic churches were full to overflowing with memorial masses. Americans, soly by virtue of their citizenship, were designated by the population as "honorary family" to receive condolences. Catholic Americans were virtually set upon with expressions of grief and concern. It was a madhouse.

I didn't see the film from American television until much later. I tend to lock on to it when I do see it, because my experience of the entire event was so different from what the Americans stateside were going through.

10. I so loved this person. She was the real, feisty, independent, loving
and supportive Texas woman I admired so much while I was growing up. In newer times, she would have been a candidate herself and would have won, hands down, what ever office she had gone for. Nellie, I know that you are in a much better place than the hell that is Texas these days. RIP sweetie.

15. Perhaps it's fundie code translated thusly
(Unknown)Woman(versus use of one-time First Lady of Texas Nellie Connally, her name and title) = an unwashed, fraudulently baptized evildoer(Democratic Party affiliated woman)? On the other hand, it's just our collective warped perceptions about the silly notion of respect for the spouse of one of the leaders in our country that would consider the headline bizarre. (HOLD HANDS ON EYES, EARS AND MOUTH)

how about 'Other woman in JFK...'. Just seems strange. John Connally was governor of Texas at the time.

13. "You can't say that Dallas doesn't love you, Mr. President."
Nellie Connolly was reported to have uttered these last words before JFK was stuck by the bullets of an (or more) assassin(s).

17. Was she in the car?
Edited on Sun Sep-03-06 04:14 PM by Mugsy
I don't believe Nellie was actually in the same car but I'm unwilling to sift though 100's of gut-wrenching JFK Assassination photos on Google just to find out.

IIRC, Connoley was in the front passenger seat next to the driver, a Secret Service agent. JFK and Jackie were in back. I don't recall Mrs. Connally in that car at all.

Still a sad loss though. Condolences.

20. For years she has stopped

Any examination of her husbands body to compare the metal taken off Kennedy for the magic bullet theory.
