Scholastic Pulls 9/11 Classroom Guide

Scholastic (SCHL) pulled its online materials posted in support of ABC's "Path to 9/1l," the terrorist-attack docudrama criticized by former President Bill Clinton.

New York-based Scholastic said it will replace the yanked material with a new classroom discussion guide focusing "more specifically on media literacy, critical thinking, and historical background."

(snip)

"After a thorough review of the original guide that we offered online to about 25,000 high school teachers, we determined that the materials did not meet our high standards for dealing with controversial issues," Scholastic CEO Dick Robinson said.

Scholastic said it still believes the program "can provide a springboard to discussion about the issues leading up to 9/11, terrorism and the Middle East."

3. This is a bait-and-switch; there's another thread explaining, but I didn't
...bookmark it 'cause I was at work instead of home. I'll see if I can find it; was only a few hours ago this evening.

6. Scholastic pulls out of "The Path to 9/11"
New York, NY (September 7, 2006) -- Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, today announced that it is removing from its website the materials originally created for classroom use in conjunction with the ABC Television Network docudrama, “The Path to 9/ll,” scheduled to air on the ABC Television Network on September 10 and 11, 2006. A new classroom discussion guide for high school students is being created and will focus more specifically on media literacy, critical thinking, and historical background.

9. My Fault
This was yesterday's announcement that has been blogged to death.
I had a friend e-mail me that Scholastic had pulled out and sent this link.
I included in it in this and pressed "Post message" button when I intended
to push the "Preview" button.

My bad!!!

10. They didn't pull out of anything.
They're merely changing the discussion questions in their materials. They continue to encourage teachers to assign the movie to students for class discussion.

That's academic marketing of the movie, plain and simple.

12. They need to completely remove themselves from this schlocudrama...
...unless they want to reframe the study guide as "politics" and NOT "history," because this crockudrama is nothing but a dirty political trick in a contentious election year.

15. Gee, are we winning this fight?
Better pull the plug on a people-powered fight against some of the worst corporatist propagandizing to come down the pike in a long time. We wouldn't want unnamed, unspecified people to think badly of us in some vague way because we stood up for the truth, would we?

17. Scholastic is closing the barn door
after the bull has moseyed down the road and left several LARGE piles behind. Their materials have ALREADY reached their marks and their backpedalling is disingenuous. They need a BIG HIT on their bottom line for having chosen to sign on to the 21st Century version of *propagandizing school children.
