Families of 9-11 Victims Say Remains Languish in Landfill
(Didn't have room for full headline:)
Families of 9-11 Victims Say Remains Languish in Landfill Without Proper Burial

NEW YORK (AP) -- Families of those lost in the 9-11 attack in New York have staged a protest at Ground Zero. They say many of the ashen remains of those killed at the World Trade Center are still in debris languishing in the Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island.

2. Two questions:
1) WHY would someone name a landfill "Fresh Kills"?

and

2) Why in the name of everything good were 9/11 victims buried in a landfill named "Fresh Kills"???

3. "Kills "turns up in a lot of old New york place names.
I think it's Dutch for stream or brook.

4. The way I understand it - KILLS is the Dutch word for creek -
- NY was founded originally by the Dutch. Area's around creeks have retained the KILLS name and the area had the Fresh Kills name long before a landfill was put there. The wording is rather ironic and sad given the circumstances.

The victims weren't buried there. The rubble and remains of the twin towers were taken there and were sifted for body parts and personal effects. Some of the families feel that there may be crushed human remains still in the rubble that may not have looked like remains and was missed.

I saw a Discovery Channel (I think) special on the landfill and on their operation to recover remains about a year ago.

7. It's human ash mixed with building ash.
I can sympathize with the fact that these people want something to bury, but most of the missing were cremated into a fine powdered ash. This ash mixed with the concrete dust seen everywhere around the WTC site and with the ash from the fires inside the building. It was mixed once when it was scooped up, mixed a second time when it was dumped at Fresh Kills, and mixed a third time during the official remains search. At this point, it's simply impossible to tell human ash from paper ash.

8. Should also remember this ...
> At this point, it's simply impossible to tell human ash from paper ash.

Some of their relatives ash/dust (mixed with concrete dust and everything
else) ended up in the lungs of the rescue workers, etc..

:-(
