Frist backs Bush plan for trying terror suspects

By Vicki Allen 1 hour, 16 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said on Monday he favored a plan by President George W. Bush for trying foreign terrorism suspects but was still discussing demands by some Republicans to give suspects more legal rights.

"I tend to support it and that's why I introduced it," the Tennessee Republican said of Bush's plan, which has been condemned by many human rights groups and Democrats and criticized by the U.S. military's top lawyers for denying suspects access to classified evidence used against them.
...........

Congress is trying to pass legislation this month to establish a system for trying suspects held at the U.S. Naval facility Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Bush wants it passed before members leave to campaign for elections in November.

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down Bush's original plan for military commissions that would have tightly restricted suspects' legal rights, and Bush has faced international criticism for the harsh treatment of detainees mostly picked up in the Afghanistan war.

8. Thanks! Nice to see you around.
:)

Frist is the worst... I can't imagine his colleagues don't find him a complete embarassment, especially these days.

The constituents, on the other hand... :eyes:

9. That's right. I guess once in a while the fur really flies between Frist
and McCain.

At least this is his last stint in the Senate. Doesn't sound like we're gonna miss him that much!

7. There's a plan?
News to most of America, I'm sure. Because from where I sit, it looks like electioneering, plain and simple. Besides, with the incredibly abbreviated legislative schedule Congress has adopted, how in the world is this bill going to get scheduled, hearings held, and through both houses of Congress in the little time they have to spend on it?
