Bush to Appeal for Unity in Terror War

Bush to Appeal for Unity in Terror War

Sep 11, 6:14 PM (ET)

By TERENCE HUNT

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush, five years after the Sept. 11 attacks, planned to say Monday the war against terror "is a struggle for civilization" and that defeat would surrender the Middle East to radical dictators with nuclear weapons.

"We are fighting to maintain the way of life enjoyed by free nations," Bush said in remarks prepared for a prime-time address from the Oval Office. Two months before November elections, the president attempted to spell out in graphic terms the stakes he sees in the unpopular war in Iraq and the broader war on terror.

The address was coming at the end of a day in which Bush honored the memory of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks that rocked his presidency and thrust the United States into a costly and unfinished war against terror.

"Our nation has endured trials, and we face a difficult road ahead," he planned to say.

Five years ago, the attacks transformed Bush's presidency and awakened the world to Osama bin Laden - who is still at large - and his band of al-Qaida terrorists. While the public has soured on the war in Iraq, which Bush calls the central front in the war on terror, the president still gets high marks for his handling of Sept. 11..............

21. Excellent point! I've got some thoughts myself...
Look, I would love to be united in the "War on Terror". The kind of unity after Pearl Harbor. My grandmother has told me many stories about working in NYC during the war. But I can't be united behind somebody who is incompetent on a depressingly regular basis. Ham-handed, surly, arrogent, and hell-bent on following his instincts, with a possible rapture-ready hopeful streak as well. Who's only apparent talent is hiring good cronies.

I will not unite behind the principle of "trickle-down economics", when the best times for America was back when the middle class was strong, unions were strong, and we made most of the products we consumed.

I will not unite behind illegal wiretapping, under the name "terrorist surveillance program" or any other name, not when it is clearly violating 4th Amendment rights. If you have something, get a goddamn warrant. I want these bastards in JAIL, not freed on some technicality like illegally gotten evidence.

I will not unite behind imprisonment without trial. Period.

I will not unite behind trials based on unseen evidence and unheard witnesses. Period.

I will not unite behind systemic torture. Period. We are better than our enemy. And, when we torture, what we do will be visited upon captured American servicemen a hundredfold. Our kids in their late teens and early 20's did not sign up for service so they could be tortured with power drills because some swingin' draft-dodging dicks in DC want to "take the gloves off".

And I will not unite behind the idea that people that hate government and would profit from privitization of essential and traditional government services are the ones who are able and ready to manage it effectively.

Sorry, Mr. Resident, can't unite behind those concepts. I guess I still have a sense of right and wrong, a burden that you apparently don't have.

12. Bush had unity on Sept 11, 2001, and he squandered it!
Keith Olbermann will say this tonight:

History teaches us that nearly unanimous support of a government cannot be taken away from that government by its critics.

It can only be squandered by those who use it not to heal a nation’s wounds, but to take political advantage.

Terrorists did not come and steal our newly-regained sense of being American first, and political, fiftieth. Nor did the Democrats. Nor did the media. Nor did the people.

The President—and those around him—did that.

They promised bi-partisanship, and then showed that to them, “bi-partisanship” meant that their party would rule and the rest would have to follow, or be branded, with ever-escalating hysteria, as morally or intellectually confused; as appeasers; as those who, in the Vice President’s words yesterday, “validate the strategy of the terrorists.”

They promised protection, and then showed that to them “protection” meant going to war against a despot whose hand they had once shaken, a despot who we now learn from our own Senate Intelligence Committee hated Al-Qaeda as much as we did.

The polite phrase for how so many of us were duped into supporting a war, on the false premise that it had ‘something to do’ with 9/11, is “lying by implication.”

The impolite phrase is: "impeachable offense."

14. "Unity", meaning.......
"do everything I want, when I want, without any questions or criticism". "Obey my commands". That's what he means. "Unity" for Republicans has a completely different definition than it does for the rest of us.

Fuck you, georgie!

15. What does , " unity " mean ? "
We should all unite behind what he says is reality ?

Is it the same as " victory in Iraq ? " where reality says we have to kill every Iraqi in order to achieve it..... :evilfrown:

Maybe GWB does read, but, it's limited to Orwell.

17. If he hadn't raped the memory of what happened on 9/11...
...by using it as a tool to further his and his vicious disgusting sycophant's selfish desire to invade Iraq and lie to the American people, he might have unity.

If there is disunity in America, it lays solely at the feet of the goosestepping republicans who alienated anyone who dared to voice a dissenting opinion through derision and slander.
