An Italian nun was shot dead at a hospital by Somali gunmen Sunday, hours after a leading Muslim cleric condemned
Pope Benedict XVI for his remarks on Islam and violence.

The nun, who was not immediately identified, was shot in the back at S.O.S. Hospital in northern Mogadishu by two gunmen, said Mohamed Yusuf, a doctor at the facility, which serves mothers and children. The nun's bodyguard and a hospital worker were also killed, doctors said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, and it was not clear if it was directly linked to the pope's comments. Two people had been arrested, said Yusuf Mohamed Siad, head of security for the Islamic militia that controls Mogadishu.

Earlier Sunday, a Somali cleric criticized the comments the pope made in a speech last week for offending Muslims. The pope had cited the words of a Byzantine emperor who characterized some of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, Islam's founder, as "evil and inhuman." "The pope's statement at this time was not only wrong but irresponsible as well," said Sheik Nor Barud, deputy leader of the Somali Muslim Scholars Association.

This is a very serious problem that will not change based on who we elect as our leaders here. We lose votes by pretending that these problems will in any way be minimized by anything other than religious conversion.

We have to somehow acknowledge that we understand that this is a huge problem that we don't think is going to go away just because we elect a Democrat. That's ignorance of the culture and the majority of voters know it.

Somalia is a basket-case country with its own internal problems. It's not even clear if this is connected. It's very sad but it's ONE person.

This "convert or die" meme which has entered the media has been reinforced by just THREE people -

And now the Pope.

Don't over-react to something that in reality has virtually no impact on your life.

THIRTY THOUSAND civilians were killed in "shock and awe", so while muslim fanatics seem to be quite vocal in reality muslims are at much greater risk from us than we are from them.

on what this is all about. The hysteria surrounding this "convert or die" meme has been built up in the MSM from just three people (as I explained in the post above).

As usual the neocon tactic is to say "well, they're doing it, so we have to do it too". This applies to torture, civil liberties and now it's reached the level of "they want to convert us or kill us" so "we have to convert them or kill them first".

I always find it stunning to think that every religion "says" it's all about love, peace & understanding...and yet it's impossible to tally all the people who have been brutally murdered because of their religion..

One would think that by this time in history, there would be enough people with access to books and enough education to be able to read them...and that those people would have the common sense necessary to think for themselves..but I guess not..

In past times, only the religious leaders could read and write, so the poor peasants pretty much had to take their word for just about every aspect of life, but it's the 21st century now, and the ignorance, blind faith ..and the killing is still rolling along..
