Thousands demonstrate against Iraq war

NEW YORK -- Thousands of Iraq war protesters marched Tuesday to the United Nations, where President Bush was presenting his vision for the Middle East to skeptical world leaders.

Marchers chanted "Hey hey, ho ho, the Bush regime has got to go" and hoisted signs that said, "Bush lies, who dies?"

"I am more passionate than ever about the Iraq War because it has ruined our economy," said Thomas Brinson, 63, a Vietnam veteran from Deer Park, Long Island. "It's killing innocent civilians, and the National Guard was deployed in Iraq and they weren't here for natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina."

The march, organized by the anti-war group United for Peace and Justice, started in the garment district on the West Side and stretched out along a dozen blocks on its way to the United Nations on the East Side.

1. Is this "thousands" as in two, or forty?
Anyone live at the scene?

11. good question!
I went looking on the web and I found no answers-- just local bulletins telling New Yorkers to brace themselves for gridlock.

The marchers assembled around 9:30 a.m. and were corralled by police
into the left side bike lanes to march up Sixth Avenue. Though traffic
lanes were kept open, by 10:30 a.m. cars were backed up all the way to
14th Street.

8. And yet ZERO mention on Yahoo's headlines
Since this morning, Yahoo's headlines have announced the coup in Thailand, the protests in Hungary...but not one mention of our own protest here in the states. How effing obscene is that? Thanks, Yahoo, and the complicit AP, Reuters, et.al., who feed the Yahoo news, for helping the Bush crime family keep us Americans eternally in the dark.

9. Did these guys get a permit???
Not that I care about permits...but a UFP&J member posted that they were unable
to get a protest permit from NYC. They would not permit protesting anywhere. They
said they were protesting anyway.

I am glad to see these peace warriors out there--being visible and representing
those of us who could not be in NYC.

Peace and safety to all of the participants. :)

12. How's this for marginalizing the protesters?

"Union members, 9/11 conspiracy groups, gay rights groups joined the grannies to parade through the city's Diamond District, before heading east toward Dag Hammarskjold Plaza outside the U.N., where they planned to await an appearance from the president."

13. Yes, that really stinks
And no pictures at all, just an ad for something silly about football.

Oh well, at least they covered it. It should have been the headline on the evening news.

Edited on Tue Sep-19-06 04:58 PM by NVMojo
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2006

NEW YORK Thousands of Iraq war protesters marched Tuesday to the United Nations, where President George W. Bush was presenting his vision for the Middle East to skeptical world leaders.

Marchers chanted "Hey hey, ho ho, the Bush regime has got to go" and hoisted signs that said, "Bush lies, who dies?"

Several hundred more demonstrators rallied in front of the U.N. later Tuesday in opposition to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was to speak there.

"I am more passionate than ever about the Iraq War because it has ruined our economy," said Thomas Brinson, 63, a Vietnam veteran from Long Island. "It's killing innocent civilians, and the National Guard was deployed in Iraq and they weren't here for natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina."
