On August 8, anti-war candidate Ned Lamont made history by defeating three-term Senator and 2000 vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman in Connecticut’s Democratic primary. Then the incumbent decided to continue his run for re-election as an independent.
Without backing from the Democratic Party, Lieberman must count more than ever on his past support from organized labor. But his labor support is slipping, while Lamont’s is on the rise. Along with some labor-specific disillusionment with the senator, Lieberman’s support for the war in Iraq is a big factor.
