WASHINGTON -- The government will not seek Supreme Court review of a ruling that bars the release of documents from a federal investigation into campaign coordination between the AFL-CIO and the Democratic Party, the Justice Department said Thursday.
Siding with the AFL-CIO and the Democratic National Committee, an appeals court panel in June upheld a decision that letting the Federal Election Commission release the records to the public would infringe on the free-speech rights of the union and the party.
Earlier this year, the FEC asked the full federal appeals court in Washington to reconsider the decision but was turned down unanimously.
With the court case now over, the Federal Election Commission plans to write a new policy on its release of investigative documents.
