WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The top three Republicans in the House assailed Rep. Mark Foley Saturday over his e-mails to a teenage male page and said his resignation was not enough.

Calling the incident "an obscene breach of trust," the congressmen released a statement saying, " immediate resignation must now be followed by the full weight of the criminal justice system."

"The improper communications between Congressman Mark Foley and former House congressional pages is unacceptable and abhorrent. It is an obscene breach of trust," read the statement issued by Majority Leader John Boehner of Ohio, House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert of Illinois, and Majority Whip Roy Blunt of Missouri.

Earlier Saturday, the chairman of the House Page Board said Foley "was not honest about his conduct," referring to e-mail exchanges that a former page has called "sick, sick, sick."

1. So they're throwing Foley under the bus
to try to preserve their "moral" image. But what about the fact that they covered for this perv for the last year?

9. You know why this
is going to go away and not affect the elections, don't you?

It's because as soon as it came out, the Rs dumped him. There's no political issue left, just personal criminal indictments. It's a dry husk, and after a couple of weeks, at most the political juice will be squeezed from it.

Say what you will about the Republicans, but they do know how to defuse an issue.

28. I disagree
It may not be front page news in a few weeks, but for people who have kids (I have two boys) they won't forget about this. It is one thing to disagree with Repukes on Social Security, Immigration, taxes, etc. but when you have a pedophile congressman and a possible Congressional leadership cover-up people will remember that.

I can't see people going to the polls and voting Dem because of this, but I can see Repukes staying home and not voting at all.

32. Well, I hope you are right.
But I don't see it, myself. Just like it is too important to the Dems to stay home and not vote for a congressman just because he, say, voted for the Torture bill, and yes I have seen this opinion posted on DU; so is it too important to the Republicans to sit home and let the Democrats take control of the House and/or the Senate.

They will hold their noses and vote Repuke, regardless of their personal feelings. Besides, it wasn't their congresscritter that had relations with pages.

Moderates and/or independents, maybe, but all the polls show they were on our side, anyway.

Hastert requests criminal probe of Foley

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Dennis Hastert requested Sunday that the Justice Department conduct an investigation into former Rep. Mark Foley's electronic messages to teenage boys_a lurid scandal that has put House Republicans in political peril.

"As Speaker of the House, I hereby request that the Department of Justice conduct an investigation of Mr. Foley's conduct with current and former House pages to determine to what extent any of his actions violated federal law," Hastert, R-Ill., wrote in a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

The White House and Democratic leaders in Congress also called Sunday for a criminal probe. White House counselor Dan Bartlett called the allegations against Foley shocking, but said President Bush hadn't learned of Foley's inappropriate e-mails to a 16-year-old boy and instant messages to other boys before the news broke last week.

"There is going to be, I'm sure, a criminal investigation into the particulars of this case," Bartlett said. "We need to make sure that the page system is one in which children come up here and can work and make sure that they are protected."

Surely, Mr. Hastert, from what I've seen, there's more to this than just Mr. Foley and his IMs. For example, when did you personally become aware that Mr. Foley might have a problem? And what is your explanation for your delay in calling for an investigation between then and now?
