Reid says Nevada Republican should 'answer for' divorce (congressman)
(Reid cracks me up! Good timing with the hypocritical morals and values crowd and Foley expose)

LAS VEGAS Senator Harry Reid is trying to make Republican Congressman Jon Porter's recent divorce a campaign issue.

1. Although I'm committed to voting in Democrats this November,
Reid, in particular, IMO does not deserve any leadership position in the Senate.

Hell, if there is a more progressive challenger to Reid in his next Primary, I'm there to assist his opponent.

No, we must accept these LEADERS and strive to get Democrats elected in 2006, but after that it's time to REPLACE these spineless leaders with democrats who are genuine and care FIRST about the welfare of their constituents.

3. I have never liked Reid. Especially his goofy hand gestures,
Edited on Sun Oct-01-06 12:12 AM by rzemanfl
he always reminds me a of grade school teacher conducting ocarina class.

Plus, it's Nevada for Christsakes, folks there get divorced so they can avoid the one rebate per household rule at Circuit City. (Mods, this is a joke, not a slur on Nevadans. Nevada has a history of being a divorce industry state, it's like Wisconsin and cheese).

18. and it's ok for him to speak to the Mormon hand when it's for a good
purpose. Porter is a Bush cocksucker! Part of the morals and values crowd who slammed John Kerry, remember???

19. Of course, I certainly don't like Porter.
It's just that a lot of people used to think Harry didn't really try to get him defeated because of the Mormon connection.

15. Not taking offense, but as someone who teaches Nevada
History, I will point out that the vast majority of people who came to Nevada for a quickie divorce were from some other state . . . so it wasn't "folks there" but "folks that came there" to get divorced.

In any case, Nevada's status as the divorce industry state ended, oh, about 30 years ago -- when no-fault got a toehold in most of the other states.

We're really still just a mining state; we just mine the gold out of the tourists' pockets these days!

And as for Harry -- why is he campaigning anyway? He's not up for re-election. Granted, Porter is a pig and he's running a campaign of the true nasties, but Harry needs to let his former aide handle it by herself. If she's a big enough girl to run for Congress, she's a big enough girl to handle Porter's tactics.

21. As someone who practiced divorce law in another state, there

are two ends of that industry, "in" and "out." Those all-night chapels provided business on the other end when folks got home and tried to live with each other.

P.S.-I had no intention of offending Nevadans, some of the best-looking, most friendly and outgoing women I ever met were Nevadans. Stangely though, they all seemed to have an urgent need of money for plane fare or rent or something. I haven't been there in about 25 years.:)

22. Hey, come on back out!
We welcome the tourists, really! Only problem is that the casinos just don't comp like they used to -- the rates are insane.
Seriously, though, there are some non-casino/non-gaming activities around town and if you haven't been here in 25 years you will be utterly amazed.

You're absolutely right about the wedding chapels -- and they're still doing booming business as far as I can tell. Folks actually plan to get married here (why, I do not know . . .)!

:hi:

23. I have been trying for years to get my wife to go there. We're
in Florida and our family is all up in Wisconsin. Visiting there uses up most of our airfare money and vacation time.

10. Asking about the divorce wasn't the strategy... fighting back for the dem
candidate was. This quote from the linked news item indicates that the republican congressman was smearing from the personal life of the dem candidate and Ried is fighting back on her behalf:

Reid says if Porter wants to -- quote -- "pick on Tessa, he has to answer for those two things."

7. So what
I don't really like Reid but I read that atrticle and I didn't think it was that big of a deal he said that if they attacked the Democrat over character he would have to answer for criticism of his educational background not so much the divorce.

8. Actually, I think he's being a good delegation leader, defending
his candidates for the House:

In a recent interview, Reid compared Porter's personal life to Democat Tessa Hafen's. Reid says Hafen's personal life is -- quote -- "beyond reproach."

Porter confirmed Friday that he and his second wife, Laurie, were divorced this summer.
Reid made the comment in an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal. It was the second time he's raised the issue.

The Senate Minority Leader also compared the educational backgrounds of the candidates running in Nevada's 3rd Congressional District.

Porter does not have a college degree, Hafen does.

Reid says if Porter wants to -- quote -- "pick on Tessa, he has to answer for those two things."

He got the cameras to cover him, when they might not have covered her. Good for Harry.

9. Nevada must be an idyllic place
Nevada must be an idyllic place, if all that's talked about in a political campaign is one candidate's marital status and education level.

Political campaigns routinely sink to this level. You don't honestly think Nevada is any different than Virginia or anywhere else do you?
