Fla. Deputy Shoots Self Showing Off Gun
September 30, 2006

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A sheriff's deputy showing a handgun to friends at his birthday party accidentally shot himself in the face, killing himself, authorities said Saturday.

Matt Barnes, 26, told guests at the Friday night celebration his .45-caliber revolver was not loaded, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office. He pulled the trigger around 10:30 p.m., authorities said, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Barnes, who had been a deputy for two years, was off duty at the time of the accident. The sheriff's office said alcohol was believed to have been involved.

Shooting himself in the face...if that's true, then I suspect he would have had only one "shot" at his favorite "thing to do"...

16. Uh....what's that pic (and fireworks) got to do with ANYTHING?
-though the guy should really re-consider where he has his fingers (on the trigger)!

And equating irresponsible gun owners with people that enjoy shooting fireworks? The hell?

Lessons learned?

1) Alcohol + guns = disaster waiting to happen.

2) Some DUers sure like them big, broad paintbrushes! :D

I love fireworks and yes I "stockpile" them for the 4th of July. It might disappoint you to learn that I have never owned any sort of firearm in my life. Jezz what a killjoy.

You NEVER point ANY gun, LOADED OR NOT, at any part of someone. He got a horrible lesson.

Gun owners know you can't often learn from experience with gun safety.

I hope the very best for his family.

that people are laughing their asses off over someone dying. There is no way to judge a persons life by one action. This guy had a mom and dad.

Land mines cancer, I will feel sorry for you if you make an left turn and get broadsided. Bam dead, one mistake.

It is sad when someone dies pointlessly.

44. The thing is, with a revolver, you can SEE the bullets in the cylinder...
they are sitting there looking at you if you were so << insert choice adjective here >> as to point a gun at your own face, even if the cylinder is closed. And it's simple to swing the cylinder out. Tragic situation, but still...WTF?

The sheriff's office said alcohol was believed to have been involved.

Ya think?

48. There is no common
45 caliber revolver used by modern law enforcement.

It was either a 45 acp automatic (think glock) or 44. caliber revolver(not common) if it was a duty weapon.

There are older 45 cal revolvers but they are antiques.

Edited on Mon Oct-02-06 12:28 PM by shadowknows69
could it be ALCOHOL? I like to tie one on like anyone else but I know going in that I probably shouldn't handle shit like firearms when I'm sauced. My deepest sympathies to the family but as far as the victim? Well, sometimes when you ask for it, you get it. It's still obscene that I can't smoke a joint legally. I wouldn't even want to pick up a gun when I'm stoned.
