Reid Demands Attorney General Investigate Foley Scandal
WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 /U.S. Newswire/: Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid today released the following statement on the developing scandal involving Rep. Mark Foley and the House Republican Leadership.

"The American people have a right to feel confident that their Congressional leaders are committed not just to the best interest of the nation as a whole, but also to the safety of the young people who every year travel to Washington to work on Capitol Hill. The allegations against Congressman Foley are repugnant, but equally as bad is the possibility that Republican leaders in the House of Representatives knew there was a problem and ignored it to preserve a Congressional seat this election year.

"Under laws that Congressman Foley helped write, soliciting sex from a minor online is a federal crime. The American people expect and deserve a full accounting for this despicable episode. The alleged crimes here are far outside the scope of any Congressional committee, and the attorney general should open a full-scale investigation immediately. We have a responsibility to the long-term safety of every child who will work in Congress that must not be sacrificed to the short-term interest of any one political party."

1. I don't believe I've ever seen the Dems act so quickly, or in
such unison (and on a weekend!), in quite awhile.

Bravo! :applause: :woohoo: :applause: :woohoo:

3. Tomorrow the RW radio talking shills will spin this like never before
Comparing it to Gerry Studds or Barney Frank, but never taking responsibility for the sins of one of their own.

7. Gonzales is too busy ripping out fingernails and brandishing irons.
I wouldn't hold my breath for a quick response from the Justice Dept. about Foley. Repuke pedophiles aren't a high pre-election priority.

9. Bingo. What we need is an independent counsel
to devote his full attention to the problem for the next two years.

Have him report, say, October 2008....

18. This really reminds me of the sodomizing of children at Abu...
Ghrab.

Weird that nobody has linked that yet.

Same Mindset...

21. Oh, I've been linking it for awhile...
See my posts even since Friday...I mention this and I also have been wondering when the Child rape/sodomizing of children at Abu Gharaib will be released...my guess is they are coming and now that Bush Co. got the Torture Bill passed along with a "Get out of Jail Pass", that no one can be prosecuted.

But will the American people be horrified?

11. Yep! Nothing shakes up Washington DC like a good ol' sex scandal.
:eyes:

I'll bet some people are out either looking for a blue dress, or a way to tie this to Bill Clinton or Gary Condit.

12. someone told a great joke in another part of the forum...
A Liberal, a Conservative, and a Republican are aboard the Titanic when it hits an iceberg and deck chairs are flying everywhere. The Liberal yells, "We've got to save the children!" and the Conservative screams, "Screw the children!" The Republican quickly interjects, "Do you think we have time?"

13. Here's an even worse joke...
...like yours, I first heard this in the context of a priest, but it works just as well for a Republican:

A Republican Congressman is driving down the road and sees a horrible car accident. A young boy is sitting next to the overturned car crying. Slamming on his breaks, he says "What's wrong? What happened?" The boy says "Oh thank God, Congressman! The car flipped over and my parents are dead. I don't know what to do!"

Unzipping his pants, the Republican Congressman says, "wow, this just isn't your day, is it?"

16. I agree with you, Leesa.
Where's their outrage over what just happened in Congress this past week? How come they were so complicit? How can they live with themselves, knowing what they've given up?

17. It's always the cover up that bites the Republicans in the butt
The Republicans and Morality are so divorced from one another it's not even humorous any longer. The more they posture and preach *VALUES* the more, if you dig into their lifestyles, you unearth some horrid and kinky sexual penchants. :puke:

I have no problem with Adults having alternative sexual lifestyles as long as they don't drag in the unwilling or prey on children.

Our motto should be morphed from Carville's "It't the Economy Stupid" to "It's the GOP's Hypocrisy Stupid." We (The Democratic Party) should be able to snag the moderates now because Foley's deceit to his Conservative Constituents could not be more clear. :P

20. whatever works...
frankly, I think our society is set-up to repress sexuality in order to leverage any unprescribed impulse in a more manipulable fashion. It would be better to honestly recognize and accept impulse and go from there to understanding, but, sexual repression gives a large bank of emotional capitol open to manipulation.. I really believe that is why sexual expression is not honestly accepted...mature choice is taken away and need is not abated...just diverted.

Real damage is done in cases like this; this young man will be conflicted and vulnerable to societal guilt for the rest of his life. Foley, by imposing this two-faced dilemma, expected to garner satisfaction while leveraging the need of the victim. WRONG wrong to do that to anyone.

I think this type of societal manipulation precedes exploitation and is worthy of scrutiny as a first cause.

respect and boundaries; human dignity as the constitution tries to codify.

bipartisian congressional investigations too as well as an independent counsel. I agree with those asking who trusts a Bush appointed Attorney General to conduct a fair investigation of another Republican? IMHO, not me!

It seems like all the Rethugs are interested in is fiding out who leaked it!

Let the Attorney General investigate but have independent investigations going on as well! JMHO
