Mayor declares SoCal city 'sanctuary' for illegal immigrants
Associated Press

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. - The mayor on Saturday declared this small city just a few miles from the Mexican border a "sanctuary" for illegal immigrants.

Mayor Nick Inzunza made the proclamation at City Hall as a few hundred supporters rallied on the sidewalk outside, said police Lt. Lanny Roark.

Backers were met by a smaller group of anti-illegal immigration protesters, including members of the Minutemen civilian border patrol group, Roark said.

The rallies were "loud and tumultuous" but peaceful, he said. There were no arrests.

As a result of the declaration, city funds will not be used to enforce federal immigration laws. The city already practices the policy, but Inzunza said he wanted to underscore that fact.

Immigration activists get decree from mayor

NATIONAL CITY – Mayor Nick Inzunza declared National City an immigrant sanctuary in a proclamation he presented to immigrants rights activists during dueling rallies that brought about 400 people to City Hall yesterday.

The San Diego Minutemen, and immigrants rights supporters faced off on National City Boulevard with about 130 peace officers in riot gear between them to keep the crowds from mixing. The crowds appeared to be near even in number.

Inzunza didn't leave City Hall, for fear of inciting violence. Instead, he invited immigration rights activist Enrique Morones inside to receive the proclamation.

“We're still a nation of laws. We still have a constitution that protects us. That's what we're saying,” Inzunza told reporters.

2. Go, Mayor Nick Inzunza! Keep Federal (Bushite) thugs out!
We found out the Bush Junta's attitude toward the poor during Katrina. Let them drown! Let the rot! Let them die in their wheelchairs!

This campaign of bigotry and punishment against the poor and the brown is more of the same. It is disgusting. It is unamerican. It is BushWorld.

And I applaud this mayor for doing what he can to point that out, and to non-cooperate with fascist policy. WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS!

3. When you break the law, you are punished.
I've never heard of enforcing the law as being "un-American"

I feel like I've stepped into the Twilight Zone.

4. Until I can go to Mexico and have them pay for all my needs
I wouldn't support illegal immigration. If you want to come to this country thats great, but do it legally please. I have no probably with legal immigrates, but i will not pay for criminals.
