Terror inmates' mail still goes unread
WASHINGTON - Federal prison officials aren't reading all mail sent and received by convicted terrorists and other high-risk inmates, a security gap that could prove deadly, a Justice Department review concluded Tuesday.

Moreover, prison investigators read less inmate mail now than a year ago at seven of 10 prisons surveyed by the Justice Department's inspector general.

"Consequently, the threat remains that terrorist and other high-risk inmates can use mail and verbal communications to conduct terrorist or criminal activities while incarcerated," concluded the inspector general's report of U.S. Bureau of Prisons facilities.

The mail investigation was spurred, in part, after three convicted terrorists at a federal maximum-security prison in Florence, Colo., were found to have written an estimated 90 letters between 2002 and 2004 to Islamic extremists — including some with links to the March 11, 2004, attacks on commuter trains in Madrid

1. GOP apologist view...
..."See they get mail. They can't be that mistreated. I bet they read and write their mail over the three square meals they get. If the democrats were in charge, they would give them laptops and e-mail."

They will ignore the fact we are being told the people at Gitmo are being detained for our safety. If this is true, they could actually be planning an attack within Gitmo? Unbelievable.

3. And damned expensive too when you have the "high-risk" population
now about 20,000 growing by leaps and bounds.

If the mail is going unread, is it actually being delivered to the "terror inmates."

Some 200,000 locked away in federal pens sounds awfully high. Is it not the highest in the world, percentage-wise?
