Gallup: Americans Say Country Ready for a Female President

NEW YORK Gallup reports today that a new poll finds that 6 in 10 Americans believe the country is ready to have a female president, with more than that saying they would be willing to vote for one. The view of a president coming from some other minority groups is not so favorable.

"With Hillary Rodham Clinton the clear front runner for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, it is natural to ask whether Americans are ready to elect their first female president," Gallup explained.

Sixty-four percent of Democrats said the country was ready for a woman in charge, compared with 54% of Republicans. About half of Democrats said the U.S. was ready to elect a black or a Jewish candidate, with Republicans coming in at 67% and 58% respectively on those questions.

But only a minority of American feel the country is ready for a Hispanic, Asian or Mormon president.

1. Oprah for president!
I'm only partly joking. It would be nice to have a president totally uncontaminated by Washington corruption...

Apparently the country is looking seriously at Hillary for President.

They are aware the Big Dog will be there for the assist and back Hillary all the way to the WH.

Whats more, there is no one else capable of undoing the damage done to the World by the Bush administration!

3 for 1..

I'll drink to that!

2. Take some points off that total because folks don't want to give bigoted
answers, even if they feel that way. I was in political polling and just like people will say they'll vote for the black candidate then go in the booth and vote for the white guy.

And, pre-reflectively, people still are more likely to accept men as authority figures. That's why most news anchors are men, most voice-overs on commercials are men and why women aren't trusted to host game shows and late-night talk shows.

Hell, it wasn't long ago that there were men and male voices dominating ads for brassieres.

Read a Trek discussion board and see how Capt. Kirk gets praised for the same things Capt. Janeway gets criticized for. See how female newspaper writers receive more and angrier mail than their male counterparts. Etc.

I'm actually surprised this total is only six out of ten. Sad, really.

3. I don't believe this for a minute. This is a case of say one thing
thought to be politically correct and do another. It is obnoxious how they are trying to push a certain someone on us.
Personally, I not ready for a woman president, based on who is in the running now.

4. There is the general question of a woman president versus Hillary
so to oppose Hillary is not necessarily to oppose the concept of a woman president. It might just be political opposition to Hillary.

Frankly this would be tougher with a male black candidate, say he's from the right and you don't want to vote for him, yet you know "racism" will be offered as the answer to any political opposition to him. There are those who will say one is anti-semitic for opposing a Jewish candidate.

5. We'll be showing our ire at Hilary in the primary elections
Don't you worry. We will be energized and mobilized to take her down in any kind of primary, no matter how much money she has. Tasini didn't have enough time or money to do it, but nationally we have the energy to shut out a pro-war Dem candidate.

6. My conservative grandfather has decided it's time for women to take over
He said men have just caused war after war. I responded with "then you will vote for Hillary Clinton if she runs in 2008?". He said "Not that woman!".

He likes Kay Bailey-Hutchinson. I suggested Condi, and he couldn't answer (he's a racist).

I told him I'd love a Hillary-Condi race because no matter who wins, women win.

7. I think it is notable that the question was 'are we ready for", not
"would you vote for".

This leaves the Dems looking less progressive than the repubs, because the repubs claim we are 'ready' for black or jewish candidates at 67% and 58%, but only @ 50% dems, because Dems doubt that the reactionary forces will allow a black or jewish candidate - as evidenced by fewer blacks believing the country will have a black candidate than whites.

IOW, it's framed not in what in respondant believes HE is ready for, but what he thinks everyone else is ready for.

31. reread the OP
"6 in 10 Americans believe the country is ready to have a female president, with more than that saying they would be willing to vote for one."

I take that to mean that the percentage of people willing to vote for a woman is higher than 6 to 10 - but only 6 in 10 believe *the rest of the country* is ready for it.

8. Poll shows "vast majority" of Americans are bigoted fuckwads.
The vast majority of the public believes Americans are not ready for an atheist or gay or lesbian president.

While 6 in 10 whites believe the country is ready to elect a black, only 4 in 10 blacks feel that way.

17. Or, on the other hand, most Americans think OTHER Americans
are bigoted fuckwads.

Per the example above, people may themselves vote for an atheist or gay or minority, but they don't expect other people to do so as well.

I just find the idea of "Bush, Clinton, Bush again, Clinton again" to be very, very wrong. It's pathetic that we can't find new faces and have to rely on the same people we've been relying on for the past 15 years. Give someone else a chance.

I'll give Hillary credit for being more outspoken against the idiot in the White House but I still don't want her because she is a Clinton and I don't think two families should run the country for 20 years. If Chelsea wants to run in 30 years, fine. Otherwise, no more Bushes and no more Clintons please.

16. A woman? Sure. Hillary? No.
Sex is irrelevant to me, and I won't vote for a woman simply because she's a woman. Hillary's experience boils down to being "close to the action" for many years, but her only real government experience is as a single term junior Senator. Not enough IMO.

You want a woman President? Run Nancy Pelosi. 19 years of experience as an elected Representative, lots of experience in leadership positions, and a tried & true liberal stance on the issues.

23. Oh not again!! America is not ready for *that* kind of woman prez.
If we are going to elect a porn star to high political office, please can it be someone with more than two brain cells? I'm thinking Annie Sprinkle / Nina Hartley would make a good team.

21. There is a real chance the next president will be a woman, and not Hillary
I'm not taking bets, but with the way the GOP and BuschCo appear to be imploding, the chances of Nancy Pelosi becoming the next president improve. I'm just saying.

22. Why do they ask "is the country ready" instead of "are you ready"...?
It's a different question entirely. This kind of poll tells us nothing but what some people think the general american consensus is.

30. Not really...
...since the question is whether or not America is ready for a female President. It's quite possible to be very much in favor, but to still suspect that voters as a whole wouldn't be. In other words, it's more like 34-44% of Americans believe that the rest of Americans are probably Neanderthals.

What I find more annoying is that most polled think that a woman could be President, about half think and African-American or Jew could be, but most people don't think someone of Latino or Asian ancestry could be. In other words, paisley (my wife) would be considered unfit to become President, not because of her gender, but because of her ethnicity. :grr:
