KABUL (AFP) -
NATO said it would complete its expansion across
Afghanistan and take command of thousands of US troops in the east of the country, even as two American soldiers died in the troubled region.

The US-coalition meanwhile has focused on counter-insurgency operations. Around 8,000 US troops are expected to remain under coalition command.

The casualties happened after a coalition and Afghan patrol encountered Taliban rebels in Kunar's Pech district and "engaged the insurgents with small arms and artillery fire," a coalition statement said.
The coalition said the wounded soldiers were evacuated to a US treatment facility in the provincial capital Asadabad and were reported to be in stable condition.

Fifty-six members of the US forces have now died in action in Afghanistan during 2006, according to the US
Department of Defense, following a dramatic escalation of the Taliban's campaign against government and foreign troops.
